Rupert Murdoch's 33-year old son Lachlan, previously expected to take over News Corp. when his father eventually retires, has decided to leave the company and return with his family to Australia.
The New York Times reports that the senior Murdoch is "particularly saddened" by the turn of events.
One other Murdoch offspring, James, remains involved at News Corp.. James, 32, CEO of British Sky Broadcasting (BSkyB) and Peter Chemin, 51, President and COO of News Corp., are currently seen as the two most likely successors when Rupert retires. The elder Murdoch "plans on staying as chairman as long as he mentally and physically fit to do so."
