FOX News Calls Rove's Insults "Quips"
Reported by Ellen - June 25, 2005
On the FOXNews.com homepage, one of the "latest headlines" right now is "No Apologies for Rove Quips."
"Quips?" My American Heritage Dictionary defines quip as: A brief, witty or sarcastic remark. Hardly a "fair and balanced" description of comments that have Democrats so up in arms that the New York City Council is considering asking for his resignation and Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid has said that Rove should "immediately and fully apologize" or resign.
Here's what Rove said, according to FOX News:
"Liberals saw the savagery of the 9/11 attacks and wanted to prepare indictments and offer therapy and understanding for our attackers." Conservatives, he said, "saw the savagery of 9/11 and the attacks and prepared for war."He added that groups linked to the Democratic Party made the mistake of calling for "moderation and restraint" after the terrorist attacks.
There's no indication that Republicans thought it was a quip, either. According to the same FOXNews.com article, White House Communications Director Dan Bartlett said, "I think Karl was very specific, very accurate, in who he was pointing out." Also according to FOX, "White House press secretary Scott McClellan said there was no reason for Rove to apologize because he was 'simply pointing out the different philosophies when it comes to winning the war on terrorism.'" According to the LA Times, Ken Mehlman, chairman of the Republican National Committee, said in a statement, "It is outrageous that the same Democrats who stood by Dick Durbin's libeling of our military are now expressing faux outrage over Karl Rove's statement of historical fact."
No joke.
