Breaking News - Yeah, Right

Reported by Donna - May 18, 2005

Today on Studio B with Rick Folbaum substituting for Shepard Smith the midshow news was interrupted by 'breaking news', a spontaneous press conference with Donald Rumsfeld, General Abizaid and General Myers.

In the past I have tried to differentiate Fox 'News Alerts' and Fox 'Breaking News'. I thought that breaking news was more important than the news alerts. I was wrong.

What we proceeded to hear was Rumsfeld and the Generals coming from a meeting with the president. This is done on a weekly basis, so in itself that's not really 'breaking news'.

We heard the usual talking points:

'The Iraqi Government is strong'.
'Moderates are prevailing'.
'The people don't believe in the extremists'.
'There are encouraging things happening in the region'.

At first it was hard to find the context of the news conference because Fox just went to it with no explanation, just a 'here's Donald Rumsfeld.'

Toward the end of the news conference one reporter dared to ask a question regarding the whereabouts of Osama Bin Laden. Secretary Rumsfeld was ready with his pompous answer, "We'll make sure we'll let you know when we find him."

Comment: I don't believe Donald Rumsfeld walking out after his typical weekly visit with the president is breaking news. I also found his flippant response regarding Osama Bin Laden extremely insensitive to a lot of Americans who hold 9/11 and the loss of their loved ones, very serious and still very tragic.
