Setting the Scene for New York
Reported by Deborah - August 18, 2004 -
Expectations for violent demonstrations in New York, during the RNC Convention, seems to be a big story, on Fox this week. Of course, the millions of people demonstrating peacefully around the world, against the Iraq war, were barely mentioned by Fox and always with greatly diminished numbers. In Fox's world the demonstrators are always scruffy looking and their behavior is always disruptive. Unless of course, the activists are Republicans infiltrating Kerry rallies or disrupting the Florida recount. 8/17/04 9:21PM
Scott Lin, community director for Peace Action, joined the guys tonight, to talk about the plan for demonstrations during the convention. Scott did not fit the right wing image of the typical, wild eyed, uncombed , anti-establishment troublemaker. Scott had a tie and a conservative sports jacket on and was soft spoken and dignified.
Scott explained that there was an estimated 250,000 people coming to New York but Mayor Bloomberg had yet to give them a permit for Central Park. Bloomberg has assigned them a trash strewn empty lot without bathrooms, on the other side of town. There was no plan to defy Bloomberg's order but Scott hoped, it could be worked out because so many old people would be coming.
Hannity always approaches his protest guests the same way. First he tells them how much he respects their right to protest and then he insults and intimidates. Tonight
Hannity read off a list of bizarro militia groups with extreme mission statements. Then he challenged Scott in his deep and tough voice, "Will you tell your group, no violence? Will you?"
Hannity was not getting the results ,he needed so he said angrily, " The sillier you look, shows the face of the Democratic Party. If you get as violent, as I think you will thats okay too."
comment: Seems like Fox and the GOP want to set the stage for any police action that might take place. It also seems like a violent clash would " show the face of the Democratic Party." What worries me is what plans are in place to make that happen?
