O’Reilly Issues (Republican) Marching Orders For Mexico: Release Jailed Marine Or Else!

Posted by Ellen -377.80pc on December 19, 2012 · Flag

You can hardly turn on Fox News lately without hearing the story of an ex-marine jailed in Mexico for bringing a gun into the country and whose parents are working to get him out. But Bill O’Reilly probably takes the cake for most arrogant and pompous coverage. Instead of “merely” advocating on the young prisoner’s behalf, O’Reilly apparently thinks he is captain of some kind of rescue mission and is issuing orders for Mexico. Oh yeah, and exploiting the jailed prisoner’s predicament for political purposes.

If you can look beyond O’Reilly’s (and Fox’s) self-serving ploys, one has to have sympathy for the young prisoner and his family. Here’s how Reuters describes what happened:

Jon Hammar, 27, was heading to Costa Rica to go surfing when he crossed into Matamoros, Mexico, from Brownsville, Texas, in a beat-up old Winnebago motor home he and a friend bought especially for the trip.

He had registered the shotgun with U.S. Customs and Border Protection officials on the U.S. side of the border, declaring he planned to take it with him into Mexico.

Despite being told that the shotgun, a Sear & Roebuck model that once belonged to his great-grandfather, posed no problem Hammar was arrested as soon as he crossed into Mexico. The arrest came when he tried to register the gun with Mexican customs officials, his parents and their Mexican attorney told Reuters.

“The crux of it is the length of the barrel,” said his mother, Olivia Hammar, 46, of Palmetto Bay, Florida. “There’s an old law on the books that says it can’t be under 25 inches,” she said. “It’s a 2-foot barrel and it can’t be under 25 inches ... . It’s strictly a technicality.”

But O’Reilly has fashioned himself Grand Arbitrator in the matter. Announcing that Hammar has been jailed under “bogus gun charges,” he added, “With Christmas just a week away, we are respectfully asking the Mexican government to release him on humanitarian grounds.” Asking "respectfully" now - and with threats later, as you'll see.

Next, it was on to a gratuitous swipe at the Obama administration. O’Reilly played a clip of Fox’s Ed Henry asking Press Secretary Jay Carney about the case and Carney saying he didn’t know about it. Sure enough, O’Reilly had a pronouncement about that, too. Forget all those issues like the fiscal cliff, the Newtown, Connecticut elementary school massacre, Syria, the ongoing war in Afghanistan and the debt ceiling. O’Reilly was outraged that this case was not up there with the rest of them.

“The fact that Mr. Carney doesn’t know about this story – VERY, VERY DISTURBING,” O’Reilly intoned. Heck, I think Captain O’Reilly even forgot about fighting defending the war on Christmas.

Next came Jon and Oliva Hammar, parents of the prisoner, to tell us “the latest.”

Jon Hammar Senior told us that he is optimistic that his son will be released next week.

Captain O’Reilly said, “So before Christmas is really what we want. We want him back in Florida before Christmas.”

O’Reilly interrupted Mrs. Hammar’s explanation of what happened to her son in order to give his own rundown of the important facts. He added, “The whole thing is bogus.”

Then he asked, “Which politicians have helped you the most?” As if that had anything to do with the plight of young Hammar.

Olivia Hammar said Congresswoman Ileana Ros-Lehtinen (R-FL) as well as Senator Marco Rubio (R-FL) and Senator Bill Nelson (D-FL).

But Captain O’Reilly never lost sight of his larger war. “But you haven’t heard from Hillary Clinton, Secretary of State, or President Obama. As we just heard, the president’s spokesman doesn’t know anything about it. Does that discourage you?”

The Hammars were good little Fox foot soldiers. “It’s sort of shocking at this point,” Mrs. Hammar said. Her husband added that the “feedback” from the State Department is “more discouraging.” That ought to ensure them some more Fox bookings, though their best insurance would probably be to mention Hillary Clinton, potential 2016 Democratic nominee, by name, along with some unappealing tidbits.

But not to worry because Captain O'Reilly is on the case! “They told us they visited your son four times and they’re monitoring his case. But certainly they haven’t come out and asked for his release and Secretary of State Clinton hasn’t said anything.”

“They told us they can’t do anything,” Mr. Hammar said.

“That’s a bunch of bull,” Captain O. replied. “Certainly they can do something. Certainly President Obama can do something.”

That's when Captain O'Reilly issued his orders: “We’re going to give everybody a little breathing room for a few days. If they don’t do the right thing (and release Hammar by Christmas), there’s going to be hell to pay. And there will be. And we promise that, Mr. and Mrs. Hammar. We’ll get your son out of there one way or the other. Let’s do it the right way.  But if they don’t (he shook his head), all hell is going to break loose.”

I’m sure the fact Hammar is white and is jailed in a country Fox Newsies love to hate is just a coincidence. But it would be nice to see Fox show the same interest in the many other Americans who are wrongfully imprisoned right here at home. Even if they don’t conveniently advance a political agenda.

Did Pres. Obama change his name to Mexico? That seems to be who Billdo is threatening(no surprise).

Did Billdo apologize to the Hammar family, while he had them on the show, for cheerleading the wars in Iraq and Afganistan where there son developed his PTSD?

Bill O says: ’ If they don’t do the right thing (and release Hammar by Christmas), there’s going to be hell to pay. And there will be.’

Yes, Billdo will fire his driver and landscaper.
Take THAT Mexico.

And why the hell does Xmas play a part in the timeline?

Lucky he wasn’t arrested in January.

On a serious side. ‘IF’ in fact he tried to legally register the shotgun in Mexico and was arrested?
Well that sounds a little over the top to throw him in jail. But, this IS coming from FOX. So by the simple fact that your reputation follows you. It could all be a load of misinformed BullS#!t.
I wouldn’t believe Fox if they told me it was raining at the same time I was standing outside getting soaking wet.

Yes, BillO and Mrs. Hammar — it IS shocking that the President and the Secretary of State have more important things to do than be be worried about some idiot who was stupid enough to carry an illegal gun into Mexico . . .

“That’s a bunch of bull,” Captain O. replied. “Certainly they can do something. Certainly President Obama can do something.”

Lemme get this straight, BillO:

You want the POTUS to order US military intervention in a foreign nation?

That wasn’t the case in either Libya or the capture/killing of Osama bin Laden . . .

.

I completely understand. O’Reilly is a bad guy doing a bad thing. He threatened Mexico by saying there would be hell to pay. He’s a bad, bad person.

@umad,
O’Reilly is a bloviating draft dodger with absolutely no credibility. You learned well from your God and Master how to spin.I still think you have the correct name.

I’m sorry, U. I must have missed the part where O’Reilly is an Ambassador, Diplomat, Government Official, or INS Ranking Officer when he decided to threaten another country over this incident. Perhaps you’d like to point out his credentials?

Like the article (which you clearly didn’t read) said, there’s a difference between being an advocate and threatening people. Bill crossed that line big time, while trying to shoehorn politics into this.

Now have a nice day.

That mean ole Bill; wanting an American locked up for BS charges to be released and returned to his country. I cant believe O’Reilly is being so mean. How dare he want this man freed. You guys are right for beating up on him for this. The nerve of this guy!

@anne-claire, POS borally is making pompous threats so that when the guy is released, POS borally can claim that it was his threats that made it happen. And even though the parents said he was going to be released in a few days, POS borally will still claim it as his victory.

This is a link from a Mexican newspaper where the business spokesperson mentioned earlier is pleading for the release of Mr. Hammar BEFORE Christmas.

Anyone is surprised Billdo is shaking his toys in righteous indignation and is taking credit demanding authorities in both countries LISTEN TO HIM?

These two links give a better description of how the situation developed, instead of the sensationalized version from Faux.

From the second link:

Publicity over Hammar’s situation has drawn concern from officials and business owners in Tamaulipas, the border state in which Matamoros is located. On Thursday, Gerardo Acevedo Danache, vice president of the state’s chamber of commerce, called on President Enrique Pena Nieto and state Gov. Egidio Torre Cantu to pardon Hammar.

“With this detention and all the publicity around it, Mexico, Tamaulipas and Matamoros send a very bad signal to the tourists who visit us,” Acevedo said in a news conference.

At most border crossings into Mexico, signs warn Americans against carrying firearms and ammunition.

The State Department’s Vaagen said Hammar would have needed to get permission from a Mexican consulate within the United States prior to crossing into the nation with a firearm.

“The U.S. Department of State’s Consular Specific Information for Mexico clearly states that no one should take firearms into Mexico without first obtaining a proper permit from the Mexican embassy or one of its consulates,” Vaagen wrote. “There are also clear signs above the roads on the approaches to land border crossings warning travelers to not take firearms or ammunition into Mexico.”

Lest we forget, GVS has been calling Mexico a “failed state” for a while. Here is just one link…

http://gretawire.foxnewsinsider.com/2011/10/11/so-will-this-finally-wake-up-the-obama-administration/

“Maybe finally THIS TIME our Federal government will get the message???? We can’t keep ignoring the problems presented by the failed state next door.”

I wonder if orally will be far behind? These two have some serious problems with those of different skin color. They like to mask it behind some news thing, but they do not do a good job.

Or else what, POS borally? A boycott like the one that you called on France? I’m sure Mexico is as worried as France was. hahahahaha!

This came up on my latest edition of The Fox “News” Spin Cycle at http://notnowsilly.blogspot.com/2012/12/the-fox-news-spin-cycle-episode-30.html

Since I made note of it in that post, this story has been on many of the shows, as you say. This morning Kilmeade was all over it saying (paraphrasing), “There’s no reason the president can’t pick up the phone and have him released right now.”

I think everyone is missing the bigger picture: How would ’Merkins feel if some other country started to agitate for the release of an accused, who had yet to stand trial for his alleged crimes?

It’s also worth pointing out that the only part of the story that Fox “News” has reported is the allegations of the mother that this is just a “clerical error.” I have yet to see a single report, from any authorities in Mexico, that describes what he has been charged with, and why.

With all my guns,
Aunty Headly

orally is pretty much parroting what GVS has been opining about on her blog about this mess. I am getting the feeling that GVS and orally want our military to invade Mexico. Or bomb it or something. ack.
