Megyn Kelly shared a photo Tuesday night of a three year-old girl standing on a toilet that has gone viral. But instead of discussing the reason the girl’s mother posted it on Facebook – to plead for more gun regulations – Kelly used the moment to scold schools for not allowing prayer.
In her Facebook post, Stacey Wherman Feeley explained that at first she thought her daughter was standing on the toilet to be mischievous. But when she learned the real reason, she broke down:
I took this picture because initially I thought it was funny. I was going to send it to my husband to show what our mischievous little three-year-old was up to. However, The moment she told me what she was doing I broke down. She was practicing for a lockdown drill at her preschool and what you should do if you are stuck in a bathroom. At that moment all innocense of what I thought my three-year-old possessed was gone.
Politicians - take a look. This is your child, your children, your grandchildren, your great grand children and future generations to come. They will live their lives and grow up in this world based on your decisions. They are barely 3 and they will hide in bathroom stalls standing on top of toilet seats. I do not know what will be harder for them? Trying to remain quiet for an extended amount of time or trying to keep their balance without letting a foot slip below the stall door?
No one thinks gun control will be 100% crime control. But maybe, just maybe, it helps 1% or 2% or 50%? Who knows unless we try?
[…].I am not pretending to have all the answers or even a shred of them, but unless you want your children standing on top of a toilet, we need to do something! Please share. #dosomething #prayfororlando #wecandobetter Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America
"Straight news anchor" Kelly put her conservative spin on it by completely overlooking the call for gun control and making the photo about school prayer:
KELLY: One final note for you tonight. This is a picture of a woman named Stacey Feeley’s three-year old daughter. The little girl was practicing a preschool lockdown, what she’ll do if a gunman comes into her classroom and tries to shoot her.
We now live in a country where toddlers have to prepare for mass shootings. And where, if the teachers in those lockdowns, in case of an emergency, say a prayer, they can be fired!
Does any of this seem wrong?
Why, yes it does. But not for the reason Kelly was putting forth.
Watch it below, from the June 21 The Kelly File, via The Kelly File's Facebook page.
Are you saying the potentially harmful event is not allowed? Because the NRA believes having tons of guns everywhere is just A-OK, hence it seems to me that they — and you, by extension — feel it’s all A-OK to have a harmful event. As for praying, I’m guessing Christian prayer is just A-OK, but evil Muslims and pesky Jews, well, that’s forbidden too, isn’t it?
Hypocrisy — thy name is Christian.
My only problem with what she said is that she called the 3 year old girl a “toddler.” A toddler is a child who has just learned to walk, or hasn’t quite perfected the art of walking yet. Any child who can stand on a toilet seat is long past toddlerhood.
IF a kid is in the bathroom when a shooting starts, and the shooter just happen to enter that bathroom, who in the world thinks that a shooter trying to maximize a body count is just going to skip it if he doesn’t see somebody in there? EVERY TV show and movie shows the “killer” going through the bathroom, stall by stall, to look for a victim. Just because the killer doesn’t see feet doesn’t mean he leaves—and a stall door that’s closed is going to get a hail of bullets (which doesn’t bode well for someone hiding in a stall). And, let’s face it, an open stall isn’t going to stop a shooter.
Sure, it’s better than nothing but it really does little to make a kid any safer. (Kind of like the old “nuclear bomb” drills. Schools weren’t built to stop the amounts of radiation a bomb would produce so hiding under the desks wasn’t going to do much. It was only a “feel-good” makeshift thing.)
But for the safety of all children at all schools, fewer guns! No-fly/no-buy!
Prayer only does so much.
You’d think in an era where the FOXies are in a lather raging against Islam they’d stop to think of the implication of promoting public school teachers leading classes in prayer. Need I point out the problem if the teacher isn’t a Christian but a Muslim?
I get the impression the FOXies think freedom of religion is really freedom of Christian denominations but beyond that there’s no tolerance. Yet, even that reality will frustrate the FOXies, I imagine. Why?
Simple. Take me. I’m Episcopalian. We have gay clergy. How many FOXies will freak out when their gaydar alarms sound? My mother, a Methodist, once warned me never marry a Catholic. Yes, that conflict is still a thing with some. Though Roman Catholic Megyn might be all fine if one of her rug rat’s teachers broke out the rosary beads.
I’m almost – almost I said – sympathetic with the concept of school vouchers. Why? As a pressure cooker release valve to end all this right-wing ranting. Let these closed-minded zealots send their kids to religious schools where they can learn Adam rode a dinosaur or The 10 Commandments trump the Constitution. It’s a small price to pay to shut the FOXies up on the War on Christians. Though I suppose I’m naïve in thinking there’s any accommodation to shut these hopeless ideologues up.
