Sean Hannity and his two like-minded Republican Congressmen were just delighted with the House efforts to defund Obamacare. Even more sickening to those of us who, unlike those three fat cats, actually have to find and pay for our health insurance, none of them seemed to spend even a second thinking about how we’re supposed to get affordable coverage instead. Nevertheless, the two Congressmen beamed about what a big favor they had just done us.
Multimillionaire Hannity almost certainly has a Cadillac health insurance plan of his own. He seemed to have one worry only about the situation and it wasn't on behalf of those of us who don't: “Will the House hold the line? …A lot of conservatives are nervous.”
Rep. Tom Graves (R-GA) gloated, “I think today was just a wonderful day for America. It’s a day that the House stood firm and sent a very bold statement that we’ve been listening to the American people.”
Rep. Marlin Stutzman (R-IN) agreed. He said, “This was a huge victory for the American people today. The House stood up with the American people and is defunding Obamacare.”
In fact, it's a stretch - if not an outright lie - to suggest that Republican efforts to defund Obamacare represents the will of the people. While one recent ABC/Washington Post poll found some support for defunding (52% of the 52% who oppose the law), the majority of Americans don’t want it defunded. And one other thing? The vote to defund it won’t actually defund it.
Not that Hannity seemed to care. He was too busy salivating over humiliating President Obama. He called the vote a “half victory.” He added, “Unless you guys stand and take it to the end, it’s not going to be a victory.”
We can’t wait for that day to come.
Orange Boner is Speaker in name only. He has no control over the teabaggers in his caucus. I suspect that his tenure will end soon.
As Jed T. Clampett used to observe: “Pitiful, just pitiful.”
