The good news is that Sean Hannity stopped harping on “Benghazi-gate.” The bad news is that the latest outbreak of hostilities in the Middle East has got him lambasting Obama for appeasing and denying terrorism and not giving Israel his full-hearted support. On Monday night, when it looked like Israel was launching a ground offensive in Gaza, he brought super-hawk Oliver North onto the show to help him with the lambasting. North is busy promoting his Brand New Book, “Heroes Proved,” a novel in which a President claims the US is safe from terror and oh boy is he proved wrong. “Scary about how real life it is,” mused Hannity.
North accused Obama of trying to prevent Israel from launching a ground offensive in Gaza, and threatening to cut off the supply of parts for Israeli fighter bombers if they do. He also said that although the President has been claiming terrorism was “done,” (Help me out, gentle reader. Has Obama really said that? He’s said Bin Laden is dead, but that’s not the same thing.) “the reality is the propaganda arms of radical Islam to include Al Qaeda are out there saying the Americans have been driven out of Iraq. They are being driven out of Afghanistan. We've burned their missions. Their diplomats are dead. And we can do it again…I see the growth of an Islamic threat, the potency of which is behind -- what's behind it is Iran. Bringing pressure on Israel to stop defending itself is the wrong approach. What they ought to be doing is taking the fight to Iran.”
Hannity, of course, had seen the whole thing coming. “Everybody had it wrong about Egypt and the Arab Spring. I said the Muslim Brotherhood would come in power. You said it, but very few people saw what was coming.” He then started talking about Neville Chamberlain and appeasement and Obama being in denial while radical Islam pursues their goal of annihilating Israel as a state. “And the United States is … sitting on the sidelines and Iran keeps building their weapons of mass destruction coupled with fanaticism… Doesn't there come a point of no return, though?” We ought to be very concerned, said North. We ought to be standing up to the Iranians instead of bashing the Israelis. But: “I'm not trying to beat the drum.” (Really? Then what’s that pounding noise I hear?)
Anyway, there’s no need to pound drums, at least not right now. Israel and Palestine have reportedly reached a cease-fire agreement. Does that mean Hannity will go back to flogging the "Benghazi-gate scandal"? Oh no, please no.
During the hearings, North admitted that he had lied to Congress, for which, among other things, he was later charged. He defended his actions by stating that he believed in the goal of aiding the Contras, whom he saw as freedom fighters, and said that he viewed the IranâContra scheme as a “neat idea”. North admitted shredding government documents related to his Contra and Iranian activities, at William Casey’s suggestion, when the IranâContra scandal became public. He testified that Robert McFarlane had asked him to alter official records to delete references to direct assistance to the Contras and that he had helped.
