You may recall that in May, Fox News talking heads were agog with the supposed scoop that Romanian hacker “Guccifer” had breached Hillary Clinton’s email server. I hope you didn’t buy it.
From a May 4 FoxNews.com article by Chief Intelligence correspondent Catherine Herridge and Fox News Senior Executive Producer Pamela K. Browne:
EXCLUSIVE: The infamous Romanian hacker known as “Guccifer,” speaking exclusively with Fox News, claimed he easily – and repeatedly – breached former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton’s personal email server in early 2013.
“For me, it was easy ... easy for me, for everybody,” Marcel Lehel Lazar, who goes by the moniker “Guccifer,” told Fox News from a Virginia jail where he is being held.
Guccifer’s potential role in the Clinton email investigation was first reported by Fox News last month. The hacker subsequently claimed he was able to access the server – and provided extensive details about how he did it and what he found – over the course of a half-hour jailhouse interview and a series of recorded phone calls with Fox News.
Fox News could not independently confirm Lazar’s claims.
This wasn’t just discussed online. The story was all over the Fox News Channel and on Fox Business even though, as Herridge and Browne admitted, they could not confirm Lazar’s claims.
Now we know why. Buried in a FoxNews.com report on today’s hearing with FBI Director James Comey, about Clinton’s emails, was this:
On another front, Comey also addressed claims by Romanian hacker “Guccifer” that he breached Clinton’s personal server. The hacker, Marcel Lehel Lazar, had told Fox News earlier this year that he easily accessed the server – but Comey said that when questioned, Guccifer admitted he lied about the breach.
As Crooks and Liars noted, we can probably expect a retraction from Fox once the little problem of sexual harassment accusations against CEO Roger Ailes is resolved. "And they apologize to Shirley Sherrod. Right after Hannity admits Dubya’s WMD’s aren’t hidden in Syria after all."
And that will probably be the same day Hannity finally makes good on his pledge to undergo waterboarding for charity.
