With all the vilification of Vice President Joe Biden on Fox News lately, it was only a matter of time until their resident psychiatrist weighed in. This morning, on Fox & Friends, "Medical A Team" psychiatrist Keith Ablow proved once again that he may need a shrink, himself, as he insisted that Biden ought to be evaluated for dementia. How crazy was that? So crazy that two of the hosts argued otherwise. But Ablow's "assessment" just happened to match comments made by other Fox News pundits about Biden.
As I wrote in my post on the subject over at Crooks and Liars, Ablow said:
I did not evaluate Joe Biden but if someone said to me, "Listen, we want you to do what’s really required to know what happened there," you have to put "dementia" on the differential diagnosis… If this were your Dad or your grandfather, wouldn’t you say, if you brought him to me, "Keith, you gotta tell me, is he suffering with dementia? Because he can’t seem to listen, he’s laughing inappropriately.

The way he said it allowed one to think he was referring to new policies but – no – only to situations of “continuous coverage” (no interruption in payment of premiums). That’s already the law, actually, and even his own campaign walked back on that one the next day.
Paul Krugman provided a full analysis (with projections of the number of people who would actually lose their coverage) in the New York Times (yesterday or the day before).

WHY THE HELL hasn’t Ablow’s medical license been pulled? This man (and I use that term VERY loosely) should’ve been whatever-the-medical-equivalent-of-disbarred-is years ago. To think that he’s allowed a forum to even suggest a diagnosis without having any direct contact is beyond absurd, and to think he’s allowed to spew his entirely unmedical opinion on the public airwaves is reprehensible.
