Dennis Kucinich appeared on Fox & Friends this morning and sounded just like a Republican as he demanded answers about Benghazi and
Doocy asked, "Have we heard enough solid answers" from the President about what happened in Benghazi?
Kucinich said, "No." But before he attacked Obama on that, he complained that the administration went into Libya "without Congress' permission." Then he moved on to complain, "We still don't know what happened that resulted in the deaths of four Americans... There have already been cables that have been released that have indicated that people in the State Department had to know that the security situation in Benghazi was already very dangerous... and that raises questions about why wasn't there enough security to protect those who were serving inside that compound?"
Doocy said, "Absolutely, that's such a good point." Memo to Kucinich: Anytime Doocy says such a thing when you're talking about Democrats, you might want to think about how you might be being used. But in case Kucinich missed it, Doocy went on to ask if any Democrats believe "there could have been a cover up."
Now Kucinich might have blasted Doocy (and Fox) for jumping the gun ahead of an investigation and engaging in baseless speculation for partisan purposes. But instead, he went milquetoast and thereby played right into their hands. "I don't think we know enough right now to be able to point to that." Then, after Doocy pressed for more, Kucinich added, "Here's what we need to find out. We need to find out what was known prior to the attack and what was known when the attack was going on." He even added the favorite Fox News talking point of questioning why there had been no rescue. Never mind that Four Star General Jack Keane has debunked this twice on Fox News.
But wait, there's more. Kucinich also went on to question Hillary Clinton's failure to speak publicly about the situation. And he agreed with Doocy that he's concerned the four Americans' lives could have been saved "if there was a rapid response? We had assets in the region. Why weren't those assets employed? Even if they arrived late, the fact of the matter is, no attempt was made... Think about this for a moment, we went into Libya to protect Libyans in Benghazi, we couldn't go into Benghazi to protect Americans there?"
Doocy said with a smile, "Great point!"
I'm on the record as saying that Congress should do a thorough investigation of what happened at Benghazi. And I've long said that Democrats need to go on Fox. But there's a time and a place to ask these kinds of questions. It's either ridiculously naive of Kucinich to say these things on Fox or else so self-serving that he didn't care about throwing the Obama administration under the bus for the sake of looking independent.
Neither possibility is very appealing.
