Sean Hannity covered the recent shooting of another black teenager in the St. Louis area by dismissing African American concerns of police brutality and suggesting that badly-behaving African Americans are the real problem. His pal, David Limbaugh, made it about President Obama.
Hannity revealed his sympathy (and antipathy) right in his introduction. Referring to the latest incident, Hannity said, “It’s gonna be proven – if the cop was shot at, the cop has every right to be able to defend himself.” Then he made his feelings about the protesters plain: “Why are these protesters… leaders are now vowing violence if Darren Wilson is not indicted. Now we have mixed reports on what happened in the Michael Brown case. …Why are people out there saying that they’re prepared to die in the streets for their cause and 'We’re gonna take our anger out on people who have failed us? …If they can’t serve justice, well, we’ll serve it for them?'"
He never mentioned that Brown’s parents have called for calm.
Guest Juan Williams argued that there’s a “real concern” about police overuse of force. As he spoke, video of African Americans acting thuggishly ran on a split screen.
Hannity claimed to be “playing devil’s advocate” as he repeatedly suggested that Officer Wilson’s use of force was justified. “If the reports are true that he (Brown) tried to get the officer’s gun and… that’s where the initial shot was fired, this is the other side of the story, we don’t know. Then that would be justifiable use of force.”
The way I understand it, the big question is not so much whether Brown tried to get the officer’s gun but whether Wilson shot Brown while he was fleeing and/or trying to surrender unarmed. But Hannity seemed to think that if Brown indicated any threat to Wilson whatsoever, he was justified in shooting and killing Brown, period.
Hannity went on in this vein until he got to the other guest, David Limbaugh (Rush’s brother). Suddenly, Hannity was not interested in playing devil’s advocate any more.
Limbaugh dispatched the latest shooting by saying we still don’t know the facts. Then he zeroed in on the political kill: “I think the bigger problem here is that President Obama has set up such a climate of polarization in race.”
“There’s such a climate,” Limbaugh said accusingly, “…I just wish that (Obama) and Eric Holder would… get off this race thing. …We’ve got to get off this mutual distrust.” As if nobody on the right has played a part.
Yet while Limbaugh and "devil's advocate" Hannity were deliberately ratcheting up racial tensions, they conveniently overlooked the role Obama and Holder played in calming the Ferguson waters.
Williams pointed that out, along with the fact that there’s a situation of “real tensions” in St. Louis. Obama’s attentions served as a vent for people who don’t normally have a voice to speak out about the overuse of police force in their community, Williams added. However, Williams did not challenge the covert race baiting going on in this segment.
Nevertheless, Hannity interrupted Williams to accuse Obama of taking a side. “We don’t have the facts. I’m giving both sides of it here,” Hannity said.
