A Greenpeace ad showing Santa Claus at a melting North Pole was the focus of a Your World discussion today. In reality, the ad was little more than an excuse to deny climate change – and smear those who don’t. The guest was Phelim McAleer, a climate-change denier. That, of course, makes him a Fox News fave.
Cavuto asked about the Santa ad, “What do you think of this? I think this is going a bit too far.”
“No, this is what they do,” McAleer said. “They use any means necessary. They see this as a moral war, and you know, any means necessary to scare people. Even in the midst of freezing, freezing, freezing weather, they’re releasing these scare videos telling children that Santa Claus’ home is going to melt away. It’s despicable but it’s not shocking.”
Cavuto wondered, “To what end? At this time of year, do you actually see something like this boomerang on you?”
McAleer sneered that global warming “seems to have a religious hold on some people.” He citied a report from Rutgers University predicting “it’s going to be really cold” as some kind of proof that global warming is a hoax. He added, “I have been in winters in the U.K. Let me tell you, these last few years, they know what snow is. We know what snow is here in the U.S. But then again, they just change the rules, that this is now proof of global warming. It’s a little bid sad, it’s a little bit pathetic, it’s quite needy in some ways. …They just can’t accept that the weather changes and that human beings will adapt.”
“But to go after Santa, come on, this is the last straw,” Cavuto said.
“Don’t worry,” McAleer advised children. “Look outside, it’s really cold out there. Santa’s home is going to be fine for a long, long time to come, and your presents will arrive.”
As Cavuto and McAleer ought to know – or at least report – global warming does not mean year-round tropical temps. As Think Progress reports, “arctic warming favors extreme, prolonged weather events ‘such as drought, flooding, cold spells and heat waves.’” Cavuto and McAleer should also check out a July, 2013 CBS News report called, “Melting ice forms lake in the North Pole.” The meltwater lake was a foot deep due to unusually warm temperatures in early July.
Instead of challenging McAleer, Cavuto gave him the seal of approval to close the segment. “Thank you very, very much. Very good seeing you my friend.”
