Not surprisingly, Fox News jumped at Secretary of Defense Chuck Hagel's resignation as yet another opportunity to attack President Obama. The excuse this time? Suggesting Hagel got the boot because he’s a Republican.
Appearing on Happening Now this morning, Fox’s Bret Baier agreed with host Jon Scott that Hagel was the “sacrificial lamb” for Obama’s own blunders.
Just pay no attention to how Fox attacked Hagel as having “insulted our troops” in June or attacking Hagel in October for calling climate change an immediate threat. That was so when Hagel was in league with Obama. Now that he isn’t…
BAIER: The sense was there had to be some kind of shake up, some kind of firing, some kind of resignation after that election loss. And it’s just interesting this choice. Because it is, he’s not the only Republican in the administration now that you have the Veterans Affairs Secretary, Robert McDonald there who is arguably a Republican – has contributed to Republican candidates in the past. But he is, you know, seen as one of the people at the beginning who was being touted as a bi-partisan choice. He is being set aside.
…(Hagel) obviously was saying things that were pushing back against some of the administration’s talking points on various things. The bottom line is, you’ve got some names that are being floated out there. …But it is going to be interesting. You had a statement by Senator John McCain, the incoming Senate Armed Services Chairman, saying that he hopes it’s more in the mold of Bob Gates. He also praised Chuck Hagel, despite some policy differences along the way.
Yes, never mind how Hagel actually did his job as Secretary of Defense. His party affiliation is the most important thing. Right after how he can be used as a club against President Obama.
