Bill O’Reilly is still hippity-hoppiting mad about the War on Easter. He’s so upset about people not calling the Easter Bunny an “Easter Bunny” that he wishes Christians would form an organization like the Anti-Defamation League to fight such discrimination. Because not saying “Easter Bunny” is right on a par with anti-Semitism. Even though O’Reilly acknowledged that the Easter Bunny is not a religious symbol. It must be the principle of the thing. Or something.
“Where are our Christian leaders?” O’Reilly asked tonight. “You rarely see those kinds of assaults on Jews or Muslims.” This in response to a teacher or principal in Alabama saying, “We’re just trying to make sure that we respect and honor everybody’s differences.” Respect and honor differences? Those are fightin’ words for Bill O’Bunny!
To me, it’s inexplicable. If you do something anti-Semitic, the Jewish faith has put together a number of organizations that will come right out and get in your face. If you insult Allah or Muhammad, the prophet, the Muslims – you know you’ll be threatened with death. Alright? And we certainly don’t want that. …Now we know the Easter Bunny’s a secular symbol. Alright? And it’s just to bring pleasure to children so that they can have some kind of fun in a primarily religious ceremony for adults. But this is insulting to Christian believers, is it not?
O’Reilly’s guest for the segment was far-right Pastor Robert Jeffress. Priscilla has written many times about Jeffress but a few of his nuggets include accusing President Obama of “paving the way for the future reign of the anti-Christ” and calling Catholicism a “fake religion that represents the genius of Satan.” However, in this segment, Jeffress assured O’Reilly, “I stand with the Catholic Church and we march in the pro-life movement.”
Predictably, Jeffress agreed with O’Reilly that this Easter Bunny business “absolutely” is insulting. According to Jeffress, the reason Christians “aren’t standing up and fighting back” is because “many Christians think it’s un-Christian to fight for your rights.” He agreed that in “personal offenses” Christians should “turn the other cheek,” but the Easter Bunny is something bigger than any of us! “I’ve reminded thousands of pastors this last year that the apostle Paul spent two years fighting against the Roman legal system to preserve his right to speak freely. We need to do the same thing as well,” Jeffress said.
I don’t know much about the New Testament but something tells me that not using the term “Easter Bunny” is nothing like Paul’s struggle with the Roman legal system.
A few minutes later, Jeffress boasted about opening the largest Protestant church “building project” in America, “a $130 million project” that takes up five blocks in Dallas. As a video showed fountains and what looked like miles of glass, O’Reilly oohed, “Look at that!” Apparently, the fountains “go along with great hymns," Jeffress said.
I’m sure Jesus would be so proud.
By the way, in a later segment, Dennis Miller commented on the building, calling it, “Our Lady of Steve Wynn.” I’m not a fan of Miller’s but in this case, I think he nailed it.
Monday.
This crap is just more of the bright and shiny things that Fox continually waves over their simple minded, gap toothed base in order to keep them motivated.
The truth is that most of us progressives celebrate Easter just like they do: with our families. The only difference is that our lives aren’t consumed with hatred as theirs are. Oh, and MOST of us won’t be watching Fox.
Billy is in no position to lead the troops, given his own war against his ex-wife Maureen McPhilmy. Look at how he treats her. If Billy wants to discuss war, we can start with the war on ex-spouses.
We encourage the masses to spread this around other blogs. Show the world his hypocrisy.
