Fox News And The Outfoxed Effect: Seven Years Later

As one of the researchers for Outfoxed: Rupert Murdoch’s War on Journalism, I’m proud of the impact the film has had on the public’s perception of Fox News. Before Outfoxed, few people paid much attention to what the network was up to. Now, it’s a regular topic of political conversation and even mockery by The Daily Show and The Colbert Report. Other than from a Fox News employee, when was the last time you heard someone arguing that the network doesn’t have a conservative/Republican bias? I think we can thank Outfoxed for exploding that "fair and balanced" myth to smithereens. And yet, while we can call that particular mission “accomplished,” there is still plenty more work to be done. I hope you'll join Outfoxed's producer/director Robert Greenwald tonight at 8 PM ET as he holds an online discussion about the seventh anniversary of Outfoxed. There will be special commentary from a variety of people including myself.

To Fox News Andrew Breitbart Is An Expert On Anything And Everything

Andrew Breitbart. Those two words result in derisive laughter from real journalists when combined with the word “journalist.” His thoroughly discredited ACORN/Sherrod/NPR scoops have made him the laughingstock of anyone who requires accountability and truth in journalism. In point of fact, when discussing Andrew Breitbart it’s hard not to use the words the words “journalist” or “journalism” because he’s such an affront to the concept that it’s only natural to begin discussing “journalistic ethics.” Which is why it is so very perfect that Fox “News”—a channel not known for its journalistic ethics either—would turn to Andrew Breitbart—yes, that Andrew Breitbart—to appear on Fox & Friends Weekend to discuss both gender bias in the media and the Constitution of the United States of America.

Fox News Tweet Du Jour: The Bolling ACORN Doesn’t Fall Far From The Fox News Tree

Remember ACORN? Sadly, the advocate group for poor and disadvantaged ‘Merkins was utterly destroyed by the deceptively edited ‘Pimp & Ho’ videos created by James O’Keefe and disseminated by Andrew Breitbart. Once Fox News started running the videos, it was all over. Lawmakers quickly defunded the group, based on no more evidence than these bogus videos. This forced ACORN to declare bankruptcy in November of last year. Yet, investigation after investigation has exonerated ACORN and pointed the finger at James “Pimp” O’Keefe. In fact, just this week the Government Accounting Office weighed in after an extensive investigation. According to ConsumerAffairs.com, “GAO Finds Little to Support Congress' Abolition of ACORN.” You’d think that based on all the investigations concluding ACORN engaged in no wrong-doing that Fox News would stop denigrating the organization. However, you’d be wrong.

Ellen Discusses Andrew Breitbart On KPFK

For those of you who missed (but hoped to hear) my interview last week on KPFK's Uprising with Sonali Kolhatkar, the producer was kind enough to send me a link to the podcast. We discussed the disreputable record of Andrew Breitbart, a pivotal player in the Anthony Weiner scandal. Recently, and especially in light of Weiner's resignation yesterday, Fox has made a deliberate effort to rehabilitate and remove the tarnish from Breitbart's record.

“Objective” Martha MacCallum’s Curious Amnesia Over Breitbart’s Disreputable History

Martha MacCallum, guest host for America Live yesterday (6/16/11), which airs from 1-3 PM ET, during what is supposed to be Fox News’ “objective” programming, developed a curious case of amnesia as she interviewed Andrew Breitbart moments before Rep. Anthony Weiner resigned. Gone from her mind was Breitbart’s record of promoting deceptive ACORN videos, the deceptive Shirley Sherrod video, the deceptive University of Missouri video, the threats of blackmail against President Obama and more recently against Rep. Weiner. So I guess with such a poor grasp of the facts we can’t blame MacCallum for completely missing the irony of Breitbart lecturing about Weiner’s dishonesty or selfishness nor for presenting Breitbart as some kind of legitimate muckraker.
