Meanwhile, let’s not forget where the apartheid regime in South Africa, uneasy about the “liberal bias” of the English-language national press (in particular the now-defunct Rand Daily Mail of Johannesburg and the still-around Cape Argus and The Star in Cape Town), used public funds in 1974 to launch the Daily Citizen, a pro-apartheid English-language gazetta.

The which aroused some scandal after state security agents took issue with such relealing that public funds were used in its launch and in subsidising its publication.

(By contrast, the Afrikaans-language gazettas, as in Die Burger of Cape Town, Beeld in Johannesburg and Die Volkspresse in Bloemfontein, not to mention the national Sunday paper Rapport, have always supported apartheid—or, in its sugar-coated official form, Christian Nationalism.)
