As a faith (Christian, that is) based network, Fox News sees the hand of God whenever one of their fellow chosen (Christian, that is) people is pulled from the hands of death. Earlier this year, Fox & Friends credulously spoke about how, if not for a pocket bible, a bus drive would now be dead. I don't know if the pals did a follow-up; but it was later revealed that the driver's story, about being attacked by black teens, was bogus and that the driver shot and stabbed himself. Today, another story of divine intervention during the recent FSU shooting, was told, in very credulous tones, on America's Newsroom which is supposed to be a real newsroom. Nuff said.
Looking all bright and starry eyed, Martha MacCallum reported that "a would be victim in the Florida State University is speaking out about what he calls a minor miracle." She describes how an FSU student was leaving the library when he heard a loud noise and "ran for safety." MacCallum said that when he returned home, he (her voice now a reverential whisper) "opened his bag, look at this [a photo of a hole in a book was shown] it, oh, my goodness, went right through." Bill Hemmer said "holy cow." Maccallum continued: "The bullet lodged in his book, he realized that that was what happened, listen to this." She played audio of Jason Derfuss saying "it makes it more real, realizing that the bullet was aimed at me, an act of God, and that there's no way that those books should have stopped a bullet from hitting me."
After MacCallum murmured "poor kid, what an ordeal," she reported that three students were injured and one is in critical condition. She then provided more details about the gunman. She said that this "is just one of those stories, it makes you wonder." Fox News Insider, in its story about this "incredible story, notes that one of the books was authored by a famous Christian and that Derfuss was "thankful it was me because I feel like anybody else in that situation wouldn't have been protected by those books." Neither MacCallum nor Hemmer mentioned that.
This shooting, yet another in what seems to be an American tradition, was obviously horrific, especially for Derfuss. But for Fox "News" to feature one student claiming that his survival is due to a miracle while another clings to life seems a bit, uh, tabloid. But then America's Newsroom is also America's Christian newsroom, so it's all good...God works in mysterious ways - especially on Fox News!
And BTW, rather than God, perhaps this student should be thanking the book manufacturer for using some really good binding material? Just saying...
