Huckabee Suggests Sexual Harassment Is Like Being Called “Sweetie”

Reported by Ellen - November 7, 2011 -

Mike Huckabee used the Herman Cain sexual harassment scandal to sneer at sexual harassment during his show's opener Saturday night (11/5/11). “I realized that I, myself, have been a victim of sexual harassment and I didn’t even know it,” Huckabee said saracastically. He was talking about the staff at a certain Popeyes restaurant that he frequents. He continued, “The ladies behind the counter call me ‘Honey,’ ‘Sweetie,’ and ‘Darlin’.’ …Maybe instead of feeling at home, I should have been offended, called a lawyer, demanded free spicy chicken for life.”

“I’m not making light of real sexual harassment,” Huckabee said (even though he just had). Then he went on to suggest that whatever harassment Cain may have committed was nothing more than someone misinterpreting the same kind of southern hospitality Huckabee enjoyed at Popeyes.

“We obviously have real issues in this country – like raging unemployment, foreclosures for many homeowners, small business operators going belly up and a national debt that’s destroying our future. Surely those issues matter a whole lot more than a southern man calling an employee, ‘Sweetie’ 15 years ago.”

As Huckabee almost surely knows, it’s unknown what kind of harassment Cain was accused of but whether they’re true or false, chances are the allegations amounted to something much more hostile than being called “Sweetie” or “Honey.”

Huckabee’s stunt may have been tongue-in-cheek but it was a cheap shot against women who have suffered real harassment. I doubt it helped Cain much, either.
