Geraldo Thinks O’Reilly An “Old Fogey” For His Occupy Wall Street Vitriol

Reported by Ellen - November 4, 2011 -

Bill O’Reilly and Geraldo Rivera had one of their epic debates tonight, this time over Occupy Wall Street. As I’ve previously noted, Rivera has done some decent reporting on the movement, despite facing some not-so-friendly crowds at New York's Zuccotti Park. O’Reilly, on the other hand, has been consistently vitriolic toward the protests. In this debate, when O’Reilly complained that the entire movement had been “hijacked” by nuts and extremists, Rivera said, “You know what sticks in my mind? The phrase ‘Old Fogey,’ because what you just said was used time and time again against the anti-Viet Nam war protesters.”

Here’s the heart of the debate:

Rivera: What’s your big beef?

O’Reilly: …Here’s my big beef, alright? This whole movement has been hijacked by anarchists, communists and crazy people. They dominate now and the good, sincere protesters – and there were some – are afraid of them.

Rivera: You know what sticks in my mind? The phrase, ‘old fogey,’ because what you just said was used time and time again against the anti-Viet Nam war protesters.

O’Reilly: Oh, stop it.

Rivera: You emphasize the people on the edges.

O’Reilly: So you’re justifying all this violence.

Rivera: I justify none and you’re putting words in my mouth and it’s not appreciated.

Near the end of the discussion, at about 5:30, Rivera brought up tomorrow’s Bank Transfer Day, a call for consumers to move their money from big, commercial banks to non-profit credit unions. Huffington Post reports that the “event has attracted a tremendous amount of support online, with credit unions vowing to stay open and do whatever they can to make it easy for customers to switch.”

Rivera said, “What if that comes out to tens of millions of dollars in bank trans…”

O’Reilly cut him off. “Nobody’s gonna do that. Number one, those people don’t have any money and nobody’s gonna listen to ‘em because they lost credibility.”

We’ll see about that!
