More Anti-LGBT Bigotry From Fox News?

Reported by Priscilla - October 17, 2011 -

As we know, Fox's Dr. Keith Ablow had a case of transphobic histrionics about both Chaz Bono and a J. Crew ad which featured a little boy having his toenails painted. Ablow was provided with a platform for his discredited bias on the Fox News website which published his articles decrying how changing sexual norms are the beginning of the end of the world as we know it. Fox News and Keith Ablow are back with yet another attack on the transgender (and lesbian) community. Earlier today, the great, big, whopping Fox headline lede reported that the son of a lesbian couple is undergoing hormone blocking therapy in order to delay puberty so that he can deal with gender confusion issues. The only other mainstream media outlet that is presently carrying this story is the UK Daily Mail; but now that Fox has it, it's making the rounds of the Christian and right wing websites as we speak. And as Fox is the media outlet for the pitchfork crowd, it's not surprising to see this article which, while written by a Fox reporter, quotes Fox's Ablow, Dr. Manny Alvarez, a former transexual who went back to his original identity thanks to Jesus, and a discredited doctor who was part of the war on Dr. George Tiller. But seriously, this was a lede story. Who cares about what is really a family affair? Oh, wait - there are San Francisco lesbians with a potentially transgender son - dripping red meat for the Fox culture wars.

The story became a second tier lede and is now relegated to the "latest news." After only two short paragraphs which cite support for this regimen, the writer states that "critics of the treatment say 11-year-olds are not old enough to make life-altering decisions about changing their gender, and parents should not be encouraging them." And who are these critics, you ask. The first (drum roll please) is Dr. Paul McHugh who was cited by Ablow in his Fox TV attack on Chaz Bono. McHugh is a culturally conservative Catholic who is known for defending priests against charges of child molestation. He argues that "gender variance is a lifestyle choice." In his attack on abortion provider Dr. George Tiller, Bill O'Reilly cited claims by McHugh that Tiller's records showed that women had abortions for frivolous reasons including wanting to go to concerts. McHugh, by then, had been ordered by the Attorney General of Kansas to stop making public statements about Tiller as if he had seen the records (dubious claim) he was bound by confidentiality to not disclose the contents. McHugh thinks that the medical case plan for the lesbian's son is child abuse.

Two mainstream medical professionals offered cautionary statements. Fox's Dr. Manny Alvarez said that it is "highly inappropriate to be interfering in natural hormonal growth." The next critic, however, is neither a clinician nor mainstream. Walt Heyer transitioned from man to woman and back to a man as a result of "Christ's help" which helped him "walk away from the transgender lifestyle." As stated in the article about Heyer, on the website for the homophobic hate group "Americans for Truth About Homosexuality, Heyer "crusades against gender reassignment surgery." So no bias there, no siree. The Fox article has a quote, from Heyer, that supposedly cites data from a Dutch survey that indicates that those who are transgender have high rates of psychiatric problems.

*The last critic was Ablow who denigrated the boy's parents by suggesting that they should have a psych evaluation to determine if unnamed other factors are influencing their decision. Given that this child is not under court supervision, this statement is ludicrous.

Comment: One hopes that there won't be death threats but we know otherwise. Why does Roger Ailes hate the LGBT community?

*Correction - Famous Fox News Suck Up Johnny $ did another "gotcha" in claiming that I "lied" that Ablow denigrated both the boy and the parents. Little Johnny, whose kneeler in the Fox chapel has a nice Fox News embroidered on it, is right. Ablow didn't mention the boy. He just said that the parents need a psych evaluation because they might have ulterior motives - ewwww - evil, scary lesbians. So I stand corrected. So sue me, Koldys. And BTW, lil Marky Mark doesn't opine on the actual substance of the Fox news piece or Ablow's transphobia. Oh well, birds of a feather....
