Chris Christie And His Republican Audience Cheer Reagan Firing 11,000 Air Traffic Controllers

Reported by Ellen - September 28, 2011 -

As part of the slobbering coverage of Chris Christie’s speech at the Reagan Library last night (9/27/11), the Hannity show played most of the actual speech. Not surprisingly, Christie began by paying homage to Saint Ronald Reagan. But what was a surprise was the moment in Reagan’s career that Christie chose as his favorite: Reagan’s firing of 11,000 air traffic controllers. This, in the midst of a difficult economy with high unemployment. Later, Hannity’s guest noted the optimism and love for America in Christie’s speech. Yeah, nothing says patriotic optimism like cheering on the firing of 11,000 Americans!

At about 2:10 in the video below, Christie said,

Everybody in this room and in countless other rooms across this great country has his or her favorite Ronald Reagan story. For me, that story happened 30 years ago in August of 1981. The air traffic controllers, in violation of their contracts, went on strike. President Reagan ordered them back to work, making clear that those who refused would be fired. In the end, thousands refused, thousands were fired.

Christie smiled as he said that and paused as the audience erupted in applause.

Later, Hannity and his guest, Republican Connie Mack sang the praises of Christie and his speech. Ignoring the plights of the 11,000 laid-off air traffic controllers, Hannity specifically cited “Reagan optimism” in Christie’s speech and Christie’s attack on President Obama as a “divider.”

Mack, of course, agreed. He praised Christie and said the differences between Republicans and Democrats about how they feel about their country “and how do we move forward” is “putting that optimism in there… the shining city on the hill.”

Yes, the optimistic, united, shining city on the hill where we can just lay off 11,000 workers in one fell swoop and cheer about it.
