Alan Colmes Smacks Down O’Reilly’s Latest GE/Immelt Obsession

Reported by Ellen - August 24, 2011 -

Anyone who watches The O’Reilly Factor for any length of time knows that Bill O’Reilly is obsessed with GE and just about anyone associated with it. So O’Reilly was in clover over a big “discovery” that GE, whose CEO, Jeffrey Immelt, is chairing the President’s Council on Jobs and Competitiveness, “is launching a joint venture with China worth $2 billion to build jets airliners which will compete against Boeing and other American companies!” O’Reilly spent three – count ‘em, three – segments on this subject last night. Not surprisingly, the entire “controversy” was packaged into an attack on President Obama.

First, there was his Talking Points segment (the first video below). It’s worth noting that before he got to Immelt, O’Reilly reprised his “I know better than the experts on the economy” assertions from the night before.

O’Reilly worked himself into a lather as he concluded the Talking Points by saying, “GE is helping the Chinese compete against America while its boss heads up the President’s Council on Jobs and Competitiveness. Insane? I believe so.”

Next, a segment with Karl Rove continued the Immelt/Obama attack bandwagon.

O’Reilly told Rove, “It is so outrageous, it’s so hypocritical and so unnecessary and that’s why I’m making a big deal out of it."

Right, and I’m sure you’ll be attacking Mitt Romney – who made his fortune by bankrupting businesses and laying off workers - the next time he starts talking job creation, too.

For segment three, O’Reilly could hardly contain his enthusiasm over the Immelt "gotcha" to Alan Colmes in his regular segment with Monica Crowley.

Colmes got a round of applause from the two conservatives when he initially said, “It does not look good.” But he immediately shifted to do what all Democrats on Fox should do: reframe the debate, particularly by calling out the agenda. Colmes also went on to mock it. “Oh my God! He’s Chairman of the Jobs Competitive thing! Oh my God!” He even called out O’Reilly on his “thing” about Immelt.

Very entertaining!
