Fox News' Fr. Jonathan Morris Advocates Religious Tolerance - Oh, The Irony!

Reported by Priscilla - August 14, 2011 -

In what had to be one of most glaring discrepancies between what is preached and what is practiced on Fox News, Fox's only resident clergy, Father Jonathan Morris, focused his Sunday Fox & Friends homily on the need for religious tolerance. The basis for his commentary was the new Pew poll which shows that religious tolerance is declining in various countries around the world. Given that Fox News used the Murdoch generated NY Islamic Cultural Center in order to foment anti-Islamic views and continues to provide platforms for those who push the "creeping Sharia" meme, the cognitive dissonance couldn't have been more striking. One has only to see the vile anti-Islamophobic commentary on the Fox hate site Fox Nation, the Fox News website, and the Fox News Facebook page (where good Christian Fox fans say they want to kill atheists) to see that it isn't, despite Fox's propaganda to the contrary, Christians who are being maligned but Islam and atheists. But rather than address the religious bigotry, Fox's hired priest emphasized the importance of religious tolerance. I thought that the segment would be free of propaganda but my hopes were dashed when Morris worked in the phrase "Judeo-Christian" which is used frequently on Fox News (Bill O'Reilly) and which is key terminology for the religious right. So while it's cool that Morris is talking the talk, it's clear that Fox News can't walk the walk!

After a chart from the Pew survey was shown, Morris said that "religious intolerance which is measured by specific incidents...is on the rise." He cited how Christians are being harassed in over 100 countries. He didn't mention the FBI stats that show an increase in hate crimes against Muslims which includes vandalism against mosques. He preached that "respect for religious freedom is based on a philosophy that we have in the USA have established better than any other country which is a Judeo Christian understanding of the human person." He said that people deserve respect for who they are regardless of religion. (ROFLMAO - he said this on Fox News where Bill O'Reilly is sharply critical of those who are, according to O'Reilly, "godless.") Morris concluded with the exhortation that "we have to stand up for the ideology, the understanding of why people deserve the respect they have."

It's too bad that Fox News, which promotes a non inclusive conservative Christianity, can't practice what Morris preaches. And speaking of Morris' preaching - as the "Church Lady" would say, "isn't that special" that Morris previews his upcoming Fox appearances on his Facebook page which, one suspects, ups the viewer stats for whatever show he appears on. Wonder if Fox provides him with a special indulgence in the form of more alms in Morris' basket!

Note - an excellent article about the history of the term Judeo-Christian and its connection to today's Christian right is found here.
