The Answer Is Ablow In The Wind

Reported by Aunty Em - July 19, 2011 -

Alisyn Camerota provided a crazy set up to one of the craziest segments of Fox and Friends I have ever seen when she asked “So, how young is too young to breastfeed?” While I was still blinking and deciding whether my answer should be “Pre-birth might be too young,” or “Certainly not before she’s able to lactate,” I learned that she was really talking about the latest freak out of Right Wingers and fundamentalists: The Breast Milk Baby, a doll that mimics breastfeeding for young girls. This topic makes it a natural for Fox “News.” Alisyn intoned, “Does this doll cross the line? Here for a fair and balanced debate is psychiatrist and Fox ‘News’ contributor Dr. Keith Ablow and Mommy Blogger and parenting expert Jessica Gottlieb.”

I don’t know Gottlieb, but Ablow certainty rings a bell. He’s the guy who thought it would be a good idea to write a book with (the now discredited) Glenn Beck, fired from Fox for extreme craziness. However, extreme craziness (emphasis on the extreme) would also describe many of Ablow’s appearances. Like the time he wrote that a boy child wearing pink nail polish on his toes was doomed to a life of psychotherapy. Or the time he wrote an article on Chaz Bono, who is transgendered, in which he decided that Bono was the victim of “Psychotic delusion” and kept calling Bono, “her” and “she.” There was such an outcry after that one that Fox “News” dot com scrubbed the article without explanation or apology.

His appearances on Fox “News” have been no less, err, crazy. Back in January, he and Glenn Beck analyzed President Barack Obama with racial overtones. Then there was the time late last year that he attacked the patriotism of Barack and Michelle Obama. He appeared with Martha MacCallum in May to say that Maria Shriver should stand by her cheating man. Or, how about when he recently joined the Fox Jihad against Media Matters and attacked David Brock? As Priscilla tells us about that incident, “Ablow diagnosed Brock as having ‘low self esteem’ and needing to be ‘reassured that he is a decent guy.’” In the wake of that appearance Priscilla took a closer look at Ablow’s on-screen, instant diagnoses and asked whether “Fox News' Dr. Keith Ablow Violates Professional Ethics?” With the recent news that Ablow is also penning a ripped-from-the-headlines instabook called “Inside The Mind Of Casey Anthony,” you really have everything you need to know about Dr. Keith Ablow: He’s a self-aggrandizing, media-whore who couldn’t keep his own tee vee show afloat so he hooked up with Fox.

However, there’s one thing that the good doctor felt people absolutely, positively needed to know about him, he’s not a pedophile. Really. He's not. He felt the need to blurt that out, but I’m getting ahead of myself. Watch and read along, but pay close attention to Dr. Ablow’s facial expressions and heavy sighs:

AC: Dr. Ablow, you think this idea is ridiculous. What’s the problem?

KA: It’s beyond ridiculous. It’s destructive. Uhh, little girls aren’t even aware how their sex—secondary sexual characteristics will develop, let alone imitating how they will be used after childbirth. Uhh, this is another way of turning little girls into adults. It blurs the boundaries between children and adults in society, it contributes to the sexualization of children, and it makes them targets of assailants, frankly, because it blurs that boundary. It’s a terrible, terrible idea.

AC: Jessica? Do you think it’s destructive and a terrible idea?

JG: No, I’m going to have to respectfully disagree. I’m not sure that if you see a little girl as her breasts being sexual that that doesn’t reflect more on you than on what breasts are. I have kids—

KA: [tries to interrupt] Well, I don’t think—

JG: —that are three years apart. Well, no, can you let me finish, please? I have kids that are three years apart—

KA: Well, well, well, I assure you I’m not a pedophile. [crosstalk]

AC: I want to hear what you’re saying. Your kids are three years apart and you’re going to say that they mimicked you when you were breastfeeding.

JG: They, they—Of course they did. Because, you know what, that’s how my kids were fed. If, you know—I don’t need a doll to do it. The kids are going to be doing it anyhow, Dr. Ablow.

AC: I think she raises a great point. Why is it sexual? Why isn’t it just natural, Keith?

KA: She raises—she doesn’t raise a good point at all. How about this? How about we have little girls who are 3 and 4 have an OB-GYN suite where they deliver their babies. That’s a good idea. That way we can further blur the boundaries so that everybody out there no longer thinks there’s any particular difference between a little child and an adult woman. The fact is that little girls—[crosstalk galore]

JG: Doctor Ablow—

KA: —don’t have breasts, uhh, they—

JG: My children have played doctor—

KA: —that can breastfeed—This is a mother—this is a mother—

AC: Let Jessica finish. Go ahead, Jessica.

JG: Children pretend to do what their parents do. Part of normal development for children is that they emulate their parents, pretend to be doctors, psychologists. Your children sit around, probably, and try to pretend to fix problems. Little girls and little boys watch their mothers feed babies and then they try and pretend to feed babies.

AC: Okay, let me read quickly read to you what the toy manufacturer says. I have a statement from the toy company—

KA: Craziest thing I ever heard.

I’ll cut it off there because Dr. Ablow is the craziest thing I ever heard. This man is a psychiatrist? This man actually treats people with problems? Dr. Ablow is either a fraud, a dysfunctional fraud, or something in between. I wouldn’t let him anywhere near people I care about, even if it’s only to take our pizza order. But, at least he’s not a pedophile.

The most natural thing in the world is breastfeeding. Animals do it. Humans have been doing it since time immemorial. It’s only recently that people have felt there was something shameful about breastfeeding and want women to do it behind closed doors. And, it’s idiots like Dr. Ablow who help perpetuate the attitude that tits should always be covered and never discussed.
