While We’ve Been Distracted By Casey Anthony, Fox News Has Plodded Along With Its Witch Hunt Against Eric Holder Over Fast And Furious

Reported by Ellen - July 8, 2011 -

I’ve long said that Fox News is out for Attorney General Eric Holder’s scalp. Their latest excuse is the “Fast and Furious” scandal, a dubious ATF program in which “straw purchasers” bought guns and then transferred them to criminals destined for Mexico. It’s a tad reminiscent of the Iran-Contra affair – in which the Reagan administration illegally sold arms to Iran and then funneled the money to the Nicaraguan Contras. Oliver North was fired for his role in the scheme – and is now a Fox News host. I’ve yet to hear a peep of complaint about St. Ronnie’s Iran-Contra on Fox. But now that it’s Holder and the Obama administration on the line, Fox is not just doggedly pursuing the scandal they’re making an overt effort to drag down Holder – and swinging at President Obama while they’re at it. I just wonder how long until they start using the “I” word.

For example, on July 5, the day of the you-know-who verdict, Special Report hosted a discussion FoxNews.com called American Response to Operation Fast and Furious in which the only Americans were the two Special Report panelists. The subtitle for the segment is, “Will U.S. officials be held accountable?” “Objective” host Bret Baier opened with, “What about this and where it’s headed?” It was pretty clear where he would head: “Where does this go? Does it end at Eric Holder’s feet?” and “But how much the White House knew about it is a question,” were some of the “questions” Baier brought up.

Yesterday, July 7, 2011, Congressman Darrell Issa popped up at least twice on Fox to discuss his investigation into Fast and Furious. Issa had previously revealed, during a January 2, 2011 interview on Fox News Sunday, a desire to be rid of Holder and eagerly ran through various reasons why. Yet he made no mention of Fast and Furious. We know he knew about it because The Washington Post has reported that Issa was briefed on the Fast and Furious program in April 2010. Interestingly, he raised no objection to it then.

Somehow that point escaped “objective” host Bret Baier when Issa appeare on Special Report. Nor did Baier think it worth telling the “we report, you decide” network’s audience about Issa’s anti-Holder bias. Instead, Baier said Issa has been “looking for answers and accountability.” While Baier overlooked questions about Issa’s credibility - including his history of suspected arson, weapons charges and auto theft – Baier zeroed in on Holder like a laser beam. Baier began by quoting from a letter from Issa and Sen. Chuck Grassley to Holder saying, “The evidence we have gathered raises the disturbing possibility that the Justice Department not only allowed criminals to smuggle weapons but that taxpayer dollars from other agencies may have financed those engaging in such activities.” The Fox News producers just so happened to have a graphic of the quote pre-prepared.

“Congressman, how high do you think this goes?” Baier asked.

“It certainly goes to the highest levels of Justice,” Issa replied. He specified, however, the Assistant Attorney General.

So Baier pressed. “Do you think this went all the way up to the Attorney General?”

Issa claimed he could not recall being briefed on the program in April, 2010 but he went on to attack Holder by saying that if he didn’t know, he should have.

Issa returned to Fox that night on the Hannity show. After a brief rundown of the particulars of the program, Hannity went straight for Holder’s jugular. “You’ve come to the conclusion that you believe that there’s a possibility that Eric Holder may have lied under oath. Can you explain that to our audience?” Later, Hannity asked about “an attempt to silence” by the Justice Department one of the “whistleblowers.” Hannity's other "questions:"

"What you seem to be describing, Congressman, is an obstruction of a Congressional investigation."

"If you discover that Eric Holder knew a lot more than what he indicated, that would mean that he, he ostensibly lied to Congress, would it not?”

“Will you have access to his emails and subpoena them?”

Hannity closed by saying, “We’ll stay on the story.”

Translation: So long as it might be useful to attack Holder, Obama and/or Democrats.
