Red Eye Crew Jokes About Impeaching Obama Over Corporate Jet Taxes
Reported by Ellen - July 2, 2011 -
On Thursday (6/29/11), President Obama held a news conference in which he argued that high earners should pay more in taxes as part of a deficit reduction plan. Obama singled out corporate-jet owners and oil companies as examples of where the rich could pay more. Those were fightin’ words for Fox News. They’ve been yelling “class warfare” ever since. Red Eye host Greg Gutfeld added his special brand of humor and joked with his liberal co-host, Bill Schulz, that Obama should be impeached. Hilarious.
Obama said during his press conference:
It would be nice if we could keep every tax break there is, but we’ve got to make some tough choices here if we want to reduce our deficit. And if we choose to keep those tax breaks for millionaires and billionaires, if we choose to keep a tax break for corporate jet owners, if we choose to keep tax breaks for oil and gas companies that are making hundreds of billions of dollars, then that means we’ve got to cut some kids off from getting a college scholarship. That means we’ve got to stop funding certain grants for medical research. That means that food safety may be compromised. That means that Medicare has to bear a greater part of the burden. Those are the choices we have to make.
…If you are a wealthy CEO or a health -- hedge fund manager in America right now, your taxes are lower than they have ever been. They’re lower than they’ve been since the 1950s. And you can afford it. You’ll still be able to ride on your corporate jet; you’re just going to have to pay a little more.
And if we -- I just want to emphasize what I said earlier. If we do not have revenues, that means there are a bunch of kids out there who are not getting college scholarships. If we do not have those revenues, then the kinds of cuts that would be required might compromise the National Weather Service. It means that we would not be funding critical medical research. It means that food inspection might be compromised. And I’ve said to some of the Republican leaders, you go talk to your constituents, the Republican constituents, and ask them are they willing to compromise their kids’ safety so that some corporate jet owner continues to get a tax break. And I’m pretty sure what the answer would be.
Red Eye purports to be something like a conservative answer to The Daily Show. But if you’ve never seen Red Eye, I can assure you Jon Stewart has nothing to worry about.
Starting at about 3:20 in the video below, Gutfeld commented on Obama’s remarks about trade offs between corporate jets and scholarships.
“Corporate jets are cooler than kids,” Gutfeld quipped, as he embarked on his nightly “Gregalogue.” “It’s almost as if corporate jet is code for something – like ‘evil rich people who destroy the planet and our economy while eating babies covered in delicious chocolate sauce.’” Those not doubled over in laughter at Gutfeld’s wit heard him also say that corporate jets are “a marker of industry” (as opposed to the many government programs that people who get rich take advantage of, like the National Weather Service, scholarship programs and medical research) used by people who create jobs. “Here’s a note to recent undergrads. I’ve never been hired by a guy who hates rich people,” Gutfeld sneered. And that was the launch pad for the oh-so-predictable attack on Obama for hating the rich.
Fine. That’s exactly the kind of tripe I’ve come to expect from Gutfeld. But then came guest Diane Macedo. She complained about Obama, “I just think it’s so hypocritical for somebody who – not only does he fly private everywhere he goes, but his whole family flies private... In their case it’s on the public dime. At least these corporations are the ones that are paying for it.”
Diane, I know you think you’re hot stuff in the plunge-neck pink and being part of the Imus show and all but try to stay focused. Obama never said he doesn’t want corporate jets. He never criticized corporate jets. He said, “You’ll still be able to ride on your corporate jet; you’re just going to have to pay a little more.”
I don’t know whether show ombudsman Andy Levy later corrected her during the Halftime Report (I couldn’t bear to watch much more). But neither Gutfeld nor the rest of the crew at the table did.
But that was mild compared to Gutfeld’s later joke, said to regular Bill Schulz, “You know, Bill, you were saying in the green room that this is probably the thing that’s going to get Obama impeached.”
Schulz is a liberal, I believe. But he’s Fox News’ favorite kind of liberal – one who is willing to let the conservatives be the dominant voice. He did later state that the right can't have it both ways but has to choose between wanting to reduce the deficit and not raising taxes, but it was hardly a counterweight to the Gregalogue about Obama and the corporate jets. But first, Schulz cracked a joke that just happened to sound more like a vote of sympathy with the right than, say, a Stewart-like mocking. “It’s gotta be something. I can’t believe he’s still in office. Enough already! What else does he have to do?”
