Fox News Website Changes Headline To Make It More Neutral?

Reported by Priscilla - May 27, 2011 -

Yesterday, one of Fox News.com's main headlines was something straight of a Frank Luntz focus group. It screamed "School Caves to ACLU on Religious Site Graduation." The language and phrasing of the headline fed nicely into the right wing/Fox News meme that the ACLU are a bunch of meanies who hate Christianity. The article, however, was straightforward as it described a compromise that was done between an Ocean Grove, New Jersey school department and the ACLU in order that the high school could graduate at "The Great Hall," which is a building owned by a Methodist association and which has religious imagery on both the outside and inside of the building. "Fox & Friends" recently devoted two segments to how the evil ACLU was, according to Steve Doocy and Peter Johnson Jr., trying to stop the graduation which wasn't true. The ACLU requested modifications which the school made. Doocy and Johnson claimed that the venue was secular because other non religious activities take place there. But sometime between yesterday and today, the headline changed to the rhetorically neutral "New Jersey and ACLU Compromise on Graduation at Christian Owned Site." I'm wondering if the article's author, Lauren Green, had any imput as she is one of the few "fair and balanced" reporters on Fox. She is dignified and objective which are qualities not valued by Fox which tends towards the red meat or "dirty laundry." Thus, Green has been banished to Fox web videos which are quite interesting and informative. Maybe she had nothing to do with it. But the fact remains that Fox toned down a headline. Go figure!
