Fox News Stretches The Truth On Gas Prices

Reported by Ellen - April 2, 2011 -

Yesterday, I posted about how Fox Nation somehow ignored the good-news jobs report and made "Gas Prices Double Under Obama" its top story. Coincidentally, that exact meme was echoed by Fox pundits later on Hannity. But while it's literally true that on the day Obama took office, gas prices were about half what they are now, Fox News conveniently overlooked their steady rise during the Bush administration and their sudden decline during the last four or five months of the Bush administration, during his lameduck days and when - oh yeah, we were in the midst of an economic plunge. (H/T reader Peace N. Quiet)

In this case gasbuddy.com's picture is worth more than a thousand words. It also shows that gas prices have not returned to the levels they were under the Bush administration. So, yes, if you go back and look specifically at January, 2009 when Obama first took office, gas prices were indeed about $1.70 a gallon. But only for that precise moment. It happened to be the low point of a steep downward spiral following a peak of the summer before at $4.12 a gallon - which happens to be 50 cents a gallon higher than prices are now.
