Greta Van Susteren Helps Emphasize GOP Ryan’s Talking Points

Reported by Ellen - March 30, 2011 -

"Liberal" Greta Van Susteren hosted Republican Congressman and House Budget Committee Chairman Paul Ryan last night (3/29/11) to discuss, among other issues, the upcoming Republican budget. It was bad enough that Van Susteren offered no challenges to Ryan as he insisted, with his earnest face, that he was looking to help everyone with his budget cuts. But she took it a step further by highlighting his talking points for him.

If Van Susteren wondered why, if Ryan really cares so much about the budget, Republicans are so hot on tax cuts for the wealthy, she never brought it up. Instead, she posted a chart from Ryan’s office and noted that if entitlements are such a big portion of our debt, “Something’s gotta get cut out of that.”

As Ryan went on to promote his cuts by saying that there would be no changes to benefits for those nearing retirement, “like my Mom,” Van Susteren helpfully emphasized that point for him, using his own language. “So if I get this right, that what you anticipate, and I realize it’s still a work in progress, is that for people over a certain age, is that they’ll still have their Social Security and their health care but … the people under that age, their futures are going to be reformed and restructured.”

Ryan said the programs were going to be “reformed” and “restructured” to be saved. Right.

Then Van Susteren said, “If I understand this correctly, then, is that if you’re not going to touch anybody who’s receiving benefits… so you’re going to reform or restructure for those who intend to receive it in the future, is they’re not going to feel any change… so that no one’s going to feel any change under your program.”

Ryan said, "And that’s my point."

Nice of Greta to make it for him.
