Hannity Plays The Birther Card
Reported by Ellen - March 24, 2011 -
Remember when Sean Hannity used to complain that Democratic criticisms of President Bush were emboldening our enemies? Undermining our troops? Now that a Democrat is in the White House, Hannity has apparently forgotten about our troops in harm's way. He repeatedly suggested last night (3/23/11) that the Commander-in-Chief is illegitimate by “questioning” why President Obama has not released his birth certificate. Since Hannity and Fox News undoubtedly know that it has been conclusively proven Obama was born in Hawaii, they used Donald Trump's birther "questions" on The View as a clever way of outsourcing the accusation. Unfortunately, liberal Jerry Springer fell down on the job of confronting this dogwhistle to extremists.
Hannity started the discussion by gushing over Trump. “You what I like about Donald Trump? Iconoclastic, he hits hard, he speaks his mind… He may be getting into this (presidential) race.”
Hannity then played a clip of Trump on The View saying, “I want (Obama) to show his birth certificate. I want him to show his birth certificate. There’s something on that birth certificate that he doesn’t like.”
Hannity was grinning broadly after the clip as he advised Obama, “Get rid of this issue.”
Of course, Hannity knows full well that the issue would have been gotten rid of by any responsible news outlet and any responsible host. FactCheck.org has examined the certificate and posted photographs of it on its website. They also posted the birth announcement from the Honolulu Advertiser on August 13, 1961. Did someone decide way back then, when Obama was an infant, to plant a phony birth announcement so that they could fool Americans nearly 50 years later? But none of that was mentioned.
But television personality and self-described “patriot” Leeann Tweeden jumped on the birther bandwagon. “Right, exactly. I think he should just show it. If there is nothing to hide, why not. It would shut everybody up… You know, I think Donald Trump is brilliant... Who knows how far he could go?” Way to show your love for America, Leeann - by raising bogus questions about our president!
Instead of confronting this outrageousness, Springer changed the discussion to say, essentially, that America is a liberal country. But after a bit of back and forth between Hannity and Springer, Patriot Tweeden interrupted to say, “What about showing the birth certificate?”
Hannity also pressed his third guest, Republican Congressman Michael Burgess, about the birth certificate. “It has not been my main issue but it kind of does get a little odd here after a while. Can’t they just produce it and we move on?” Hannity disingenuously asked.
Nor has Burgess, apparently. He said, “Obviously, there’s some value to the White House not producing it. I don’t know what that could be. This easily could be ended. It could have been ended a couple of years ago.”
Yes it could have been – and it should have been – but people like Hannity, Trump, Tweeden the Patriot and now Burgess won’t let it.
You can contact Hannity at firstname.lastname@example.org and Burgess via email, only if you are a constituent. Phone numbers and email links are here. You can contact Tweeden the Patriot via her website. She asks for “professional inquiries only, please” but I say, if you want to be treated like a professional, you need to act like one.
