Van Susteren Jumps To Defend Her BFF Sarah Palin From Bill Maher

Reported by Ellen - March 23, 2011 -

How many Fox News memes can “liberal” Greta Van Susteren work into a 1:45 segment about Bill Maher calling Sarah Palin a “dumb twat?” Let us count the ways.

For starters, Van Susteren took a swipe at Bill Maher: “He ran out of humor, so he tried his old stand-by, degrading a woman. His favorite target? Governor Sarah Palin, for something she didn’t even do.”

Point number two there, for Van Susteren, rushing to the defense of Palin before revealing what Maher said or why.

Van Susteren went on to complain that Maher called Palin a “vulgar name, referring to the female anatomy.” I thought it must have been the “c” word. Frankly, when I found out it was “twat,” I wondered what the big deal was. Then I remembered: This was BFF Palin.

Van Susteren played the clip of Maher saying on his HBO show that Palin “finally heard what happened in Japan and she’s demanding that we invade ‘Tsunami.’ I mean she says, ‘These ‘Tsunamians’ will not get away with this.’ Oh, speaking of dumb twats, did you…” Fox bleeped the “twat.”

Just so you knew not to laugh, a banner on the lower third of the screen read, “DESPICABLE DISPLAY.” Another point to Van Susteren or maybe that one should go to a producer.

Then it was on to suggest the National Organization for Women are hypocrites for not leaping to Palin’s defense the way Van Susteren did. “Now at first the National Organization for Women didn’t comment about Maher’s verbal attack. But just a short time ago, the organization finally issued this statement saying, ‘Stop degrading women with whom you disagree and/or don’t like by using female body terms or other gender-associated slurs.’ But then, the group went on to attack so-called conservative right-wingers saying, ‘You’re trying to take up our time getting us to defend your friend, Sarah Palin. If you keep us busy defending her, we have less time to defend women’s bodies from the onslaught of reproductive rights attacks and other threats to our freedom.’”

What Van Susteren failed to mention on the air (though she did link to a Daily Caller article about it on her blog) was that NOW further said, “Sorry, but we can’t defend Palin or even Hillary Clinton from every sexist insult hurled at them in the media. That task would be impossible, and it would consume us… Did you speak up once on behalf of a woman politician before you learned the name Sarah Palin? Did you work toward equality for women in any way prior to August 2008? …It would be nice to think that you’ve suddenly discovered sexism and are interested in joining us in the struggle for full equality. But this really smacks of the worst kind of hypocrisy: Folks with no history of working on an issue trying to discredit those who have been working for decades on the issue. Ridiculous.”

“We report, you decide,” Van Susteren chirped, before adding this little programming note that managed to suggest that Palin is in the same league as Hillary Clinton and Nancy Pelosi. “(Palin) will be here live On The Record tomorrow night. She just returned from a trip to Israel. Now, she’s going to get the same type of interview right here on On The Record that Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi both get when they go On The Record: substance, not degrading insults.”

I’m all for substance over insults. Let’s see how much of that Van Susteren demands from Palin tonight.

So I counted five instances of working in a Fox News message: attacking Maher, defending Palin, the biased banner, dragging in NOW and then elevating Palin to Clinton/Pelosi level. That works out to about one for every 20 seconds.
