Martha MacCallum & Fox Friends Promote More "Baby Joseph" Lies
Reported by Priscilla - March 16, 2011 -
There is no depth to which Fox "News" will sink when they are promoting "pro-life" propaganda. They had no problem with Bill O'Reilly's relentless attacks on abortion provider George Tiller who was assassinated by a "pro-life" fanatic. Lila Rose and her anti-Planned Parenthood sting videos receive a warm welcome on Fox. Recently, Fox's stable of "pro-life" zealots provided a full week of discussion regarding Rose's latest caper which resulted in no, zero, zip, nada prosecution. Father Frank Pavone of the radical anti-choice group, "Priests for Life," is also provided with a platform from which to espouse his not exactly in the mainstream views. He was a favorite during the Fox "News" Terri Schiavo media circus. Now that the newest right wing "pro-life" media feeding frenzy (aided and abetted by Fox "News") is about how "Baby Joseph" has supposedly suffered at the hands of a Canadian "death panel," Frank Pavone, once again, has a Fox "News" pulpit. Earlier this month he and official Fox News person, Martha MacCallum kvetched about how the terrible Canadian healthcare system was abusing Baby Joseph's parents. He was interviewed, yesterday, by Megyn Kelly, about how he and his "pro-life" zealots were able to finesse a rescue of Baby Joseph who is now in an American Catholic hospital where he will have the tracheotomy whch the Canadian doctors, based on concern for the child, would not perform. He claimed that the latest development resulted from Fox "News" coverage. Megyn Kelly congratulated him on his "victory" over evil Canada. And yesterday morning, he appeared on Fox & Friends, where his pal Martha MacCallum promoted more lies about the Baby Joseph and his having been "saved" by pro-life superhero (even has his own jet) Father Frank Pavone. Move over Superman, Father Frank Pavone is moving in as the new purveyor of the Fox News version of "truth, justice, and the American way!"
In the "tease" for MacCallum's segment (the *8th Fox piece within a month), Steve Doocy claimed that the Canadian hospital "wanted Baby Joseph to die." (Should there be any question about why this hospital was receiving death threats?) Right out of the starting gate, Martha MacCallum promoted the propaganda when she referred, in keeping with the rhetoric being espoused by "pro-life" media and "Priests for Life," to Baby Joseph's "overnight rescue." She promoted a Pavone lie when she claimed that this "rescue" was done "just hours before he was to be pulled off of life support." Fact Check - "The family's lawyer said that "Joseph's physical condition remains "status quo" and he will remain on a ventilator pending the hearing by the Ontario Court of Appeal." Fact Check - Despite Pavone's fantasy about a super secret "covert mission," the "family's lawyer Claudio Martini noted Sunday's transfer was not as dramatic as portrayed by Father Pavone and his Priests for Life group, who used the phrase 'under the cover of darkness.' The London hospital responded promptly to the family's discharge request, Mr. Martini said." MacCallum introduced the child's father and Father Pavone who "saved Baby Joseph's life." MacCallum said "good to have you here." Moe Maraachli said that the baby will "get treatment" in the US. Factcheck - the hospital is considering doing a tracheotomy so that the baby can go to a skilled nursing facility. As the child's condition is terminal, any "treatment" would be palliative. Maraachli then criticized the Canadian healthcare system for being heartless and cruel, unlike the Catholic hospital where the child is now a patient. A large photo of a healthy Baby Joseph, not on the ventilator, was shown. The agitprop chyron: "The Battle for Baby Joseph." MacCallum read a statement from the Canadian Hospital. She described how Pavone wants the baby to be treated according to his parents' wishes. Pavone did admit that the baby's condition is incurable but that "additional care" shouldn't be denied. He then misrepresented the hospital by claiming that the hospital said that "the child is going to die anyway, we're not going to give this additional care that parents are requesting." In providing some background for the case, he stated that the hospital refused to do a tracheotomy despite numerous doctors saying that this would have been appropriate. Fact Check - the Canadian hospital asserts that the tracheotomy will cause discomfort and increase the risk of infection. Neither MacCallum nor Pavone have ever mentioned that inconvenient truth. MacCallum ended with a comment about how Fox will be following this story. (Ya think!)
Comment: Fox "News" - we don't need no stinking facts!
Addendum - the "fair & balanced" Fox News website ran an article which included the lie that the baby was "just hours away from being pulled off life support."
