Why Be Calm About Egypt When You Can Fear Monger About Obama Administration?

Reported by Ellen - February 14, 2011 -

During its coverage of Hosni Mubarek’s decision to step down as president of Egypt on Friday (2/11/11), America Live hosted the sleazy Islamophobe Mark Steyn to fear monger discuss the situation. Neither Steyn nor host Megyn Kelly wasted any time stoking fears and apprehensions about the Obama administration.

Kelly began by saying, "The administration suffered an embarrassing failure in intelligence by relying on sketchy news reports coming out of Egypt… this also compounded by the testimony of the Director of National Intelligence… about the nature of the Muslim Brotherhood, remarks he is trying to dial back today." She was referring to DNI James Clapper’s supposed statement that the Muslim Brotherhood is “largely secular.”

Actually, that’s not what Clapper said, He said the Muslim Brotherhood is a term for an umbrella organization that is largely secular. But with a voice dripping with disdain and disbelief, Kelly repeated (incorrectly), “What he actually said is that the Muslim Brotherhood is largely secular.”

Steyn didn’t need any more prompting to go on the attack against the Obama administration as abetting Muslim extremism and harming American interests. Steyn said the “image of the United States” is “blundering tourists in a very dangerous region, that they don’t know what’s going on.”

Speaking of not knowing what’s going on, The Guardian reported about Steyn,

Apart from predicting that George Bush would win the 2000 presidential election in a landslide, Steyn said at regular intervals that Osama bin Laden "will remain dead". Weeks after the invasion of Iraq he assured his readers that there would be "no widespread resentment at or resistance of the western military presence"; in December 2003 he wrote that "another six weeks of insurgency sounds about right, after which it will peter out"; and the following March he insisted that: "I don't think it's possible for anyone who looks at Iraq honestly to see it as anything other than a success story."

That Mark Steyn went on to call Clapper “an idiot” who should not be allowed out in public. Well, he should know.

“I think this is the beginning of the unraveling of the American Middle East," Steyn now prophesied. After sneering that Libya’s Qaddafi and Syria’s Assad are “sleeping soundly” in their beds, Steyn said, “What is at issue here is the credibility of the global super power to influence its friends and for the last 18 days, it sent a consistent message to the world that it is harmless to its enemies and treacherous to its friends.”

Steyn later said that our country has sent out a media message that it’s “at best impotent in the Middle East and at worst a blundering fool.”

Unlike that success story in Iraq, apparently.

Rather than challenge Steyn in any way, Kelly said in a sincere voice, “Thank you so much for your insights.”
