Fox News’ Suggests WikiLeaks’ Bradley Manning Is A Liberal Hero

Reported by Ellen - December 28, 2010 -

The latest front in Fox News’ war on liberals is in “asking” if WikiLeaks’ Bradley Manning is a liberal hero. Although a graphic on the screen showed a photo of Manning with “Liberal hero?” written underneath, O’Reilly Factor guest host Eric Bolling made it clear last night (12/27/10) there was no question about it. In his introduction, Bolling said, “It was only a matter of time before we start seeing the left try to turn Army Private Bradley Manning into a hero.” Guest Jed Babbin called Manning, “a conflation, almost a confection, of all of the things the liberals want. He’s gay, he’s a whistleblower, he’s trying to expose supposed war crimes in Iraq. This is their dream guy.”

Bolling never explained who has made Manning a hero or what that entails. All he said was that Manning “has defenders who are not only rallying behind him but accusing the United States of torturing him in prison.”

Apparently, Bolling was referring to a recent piece in Salon in which Glenn Greenwald, a constitutional law and civil rights attorney who is highly regarded in the liberal blogosphere (and elsewhere), criticized Manning’s solitary confinement as torture. Although Greenwald openly championed Manning’s whistleblower cause, he stated,

But ultimately, what one thinks of Manning's alleged acts is irrelevant to the issue here. The U.S. ought at least to abide by minimal standards of humane treatment in how it detains him. That's true for every prisoner, at all times. But departures from such standards are particularly egregious where, as here, the detainee has merely been accused, but never convicted, of wrongdoing.

Though Bolling undoubtedly fashions himself as an America-championing patriot, he dismissed such concerns by saying, “So what if Manning is in solitary? Who cares? The guy has sensitive state secrets and he’s singing like a canary.”

Jed Babbin, formerly of the George W. Bush administration, tried to argue that one reason to keep Manning in solitary was for his own safety. In that case, Manning’s activities would not be so restricted, I wouldn't think. Greenwald wrote, “

For 23 out of 24 hours every day -- for seven straight months and counting -- he sits completely alone in his cell. Even inside his cell, his activities are heavily restricted; he's barred even from exercising and is under constant surveillance to enforce those restrictions. For reasons that appear completely punitive, he's being denied many of the most basic attributes of civilized imprisonment, including even a pillow or sheets for his bed (he is not and never has been on suicide watch). For the one hour per day when he is freed from this isolation, he is barred from accessing any news or current events programs. Lt. Villiard protested that the conditions are not "like jail movies where someone gets thrown into the hole," but confirmed that he is in solitary confinement, entirely alone in his cell except for the one hour per day he is taken out.

Greenwald also noted that Lt. Villiard claimed Manning is allowed to watch news or current events shows during his allotment of television but, Greenwald said, that contradicts first-hand reports of Manning’s treatment.

Babbin knew the battle plan. He said that Manning “is a conflation, almost a confection, of all of the things the liberals want. He’s gay, he’s a whistleblower, he’s trying to expose supposed war crimes in Iraq. This is their dream guy. So they’re gonna come to these political stunts. They’re going to try to make him out to be a hero and they’re going to try to pervert the military justice system to his benefit.”

After watching the discussion, I think it’s only a matter of time before Fox News suggests that Osama Bin Laden is a liberal hero.
