Maddow And Stewart Take On Glenn Beck

Reported by Guest Blogger - November 19, 2010 -

Remember that old adage, “It doesn’t matter what they say about you, as long as they spell your name right”? Glenn Beck must be positively gleeful as both Rachel Maddow and Jon Stewart took to the airwaves in the same day to roast the Fox “News” Rodeo Clown; one with comedy and the other with righteous indignation. I’ll let you decide which is which.

First up: Maddow. Maddow was reacting to the latest Ben Gleck™ idiocy on his Radio Drama Theatre when he smeared the Iraq Afghanistan Veterans Association as just another way to attack his One World Government Bogeyman George Soros, Communists, and the SEIU, all familiar strawmen to anyone who listens to Beck regularly. The IAVA’s mission statement says, “IAVA addresses critical issues facing new veterans and their families, including mental health injuries, a stretched VA system, inadequate health care for female veterans, and GI Bill educational benefits. IAVA also provides valuable resources and empowers veterans to connect with one another, fostering a strong and lasting community.”

Who can argue with that? Glenn Beck, of course.

It all started when a caller falsely claimed that the IAVA was taking money from MoveOn.org, one of the linchpins in Beck’s phony George Soros Conspiracy. Beck not only didn’t push back against the ludicrous charge, but jumped on that bucking bronco and rode it for all it was worth. That was one rodeo too far for Maddow, who ripped Beck a new one. The Executive Director of IAVA is Paul Rieckhoff, who also helped found the organization and has been a guest on Maddow’s show many times. You might say he’s the go-to-guy for Maddow when she needs a soldier’s perspective to a particular news story. Therefore, it’s not surprising that she’d come to the organizations defense. However, classy as always, she did it with facts, having called IAVA to determine that it takes no money from MoveOn.org.

However, what Glenn Beck will never tell you is that he was for the IAWA before he was against it. As Think Progress tells us [complete with video], “In 2007, he praised the organization and its founder Paul Rieckhoff.”

BECK: Let me tell you something. If you are a vet and you’re watching this show and you’ve got a problem, you either get it to Paul [Rieckhoff] and his [IAWA] organization or you get it to me. This is absolutely inexcusable. And we will take care of it. It’s the right thing to do.

However, it makes a much better One World Government Conspiracy for Beck if his Beckerheads ignore the facts—and what he might have said previously—and just listen to the hypnotic sound of his mellifluent DJ radio voice.

Next up: Jon Stewart, of Comedy Central’s Daily Show, who took on the whole George Soros Puppet Master smears by returning to his hilarious Glenn Beck impersonation, complete with chalkboard, magnetic stickers, and puppets, which included the lovable Mortimer Snerd (sadly never named). It was another Stewart tour de force, which took up more than half of the show, spanning a commercial break. It’s easily one of Stewart’s best and needs to be seen to be appreciated:
