In Retaliation For NPR's Firing Williams, O'Reilly Vows To Cut Off Funding

Reported by Ellen - October 21, 2010 -

Fox News pundits didn't just take to the airwaves to defend Juan Williams who was just fired by NPR for his anti-Muslim comments on The O'Reilly Factor earlier in the week, they are vowing to retaliate by cutting off its funding. If you believe Bill O'Reilly, he will personally make that happen.

O'Reilly told Jon Scott and Happening Now today, that NPR is "not a news organization, it’s basically a left-wing outfit that wants one opinion… It’s almost 100% liberal. Juan’s a liberal… Once you get away from that orthodoxy, National Public Radio doesn’t want any part of you. Now if they were a free enterprise, they would have a right to that.”

O'Reilly went on to call for "the immediate suspension of every taxpayer dollar going into the National Public Radio outfit. We’re gonna get legislation. We’re gonna freeze it down. (They won’t be able to) get any more money."

Scott added, “The conservative former Speaker of the House” is calling for a Congressional investigation. Of course, that “former Speaker” just happens to be Fox News contributor, Newt Gingrich who insisted that Williams was just “honestly” saying how he felt “about Islam.” Gingrich also said people should “read” what Williams said because it was “very balanced.”

You have to wonder if there are any kind of anti-Muslim comments Fox News would object to. Here's what Williams said which can be viewed in its entire context here: “I think you’re right… I’m not a bigot… but when I get on a plane, I gotta tell you, if I see people who are in Muslim garb, and I think, you know, they’re identifying themselves first and foremost as Muslims, I get worried. I get nervous.”

This was in response to agreeing with O'Reilly's even stronger anti-Muslim rant.

Furthermore, Williams has made racially inflammatory statements on Fox in the past, including likening Michelle Obama to "Stokely Carmichael in a designer dress."

O'Reilly told Scott, "I want it suspended today while the investigation takes place... What Juan Williams said was… his honest feeling… and believe me, tens of millions of Americans feel exactly the same way.

Scott threw in his two cents. “It’s a natural reaction, isn’t it?”

O’Reilly said Megyn Kelly will be on The Factor tonight arguing that Williams “has a lawsuit” against NPR.

He added that Williams will “get a big book contract out of this” and that Fox will “stand by” Williams.

Anyone want to bet that book contract will come from one of News Corp’s publishing companies?

By the way, where was that outrage over censorship on behalf of Helen Thomas' honest opinion about Israel? I must have missed it.
