Beck Uses Fox News To Make Another Not-So-Thinly Veiled Pitch For Gold
Reported by Ellen - October 8, 2010 -
Glenn Beck once again turned his opening monologue on Fox News into an argument for buying gold. And despite his sincere, "I'm just concerned about helping my audience" persona, neither Beck nor the Fox News producers seemed to think it important to point out that Beck has a personal financial stake in selling gold to his viewers. (H/T Mike S.)
FoxNews.com certainly knew what was going on. They called their video of the segment, “12 Signs Economy May Tank” and subtitled it, “Where is the ‘smart money’ going?”
Beck began the segment with another tear about “socialists” trying to “shape a new world through the destruction of the current one.” And never mind the Beck behind the curtain who’s trying to destroy his viewers’ current world by urging them to give up Social Security and Medicare, national parks and forests, savings and even their automobiles to fight his ideological war(s).
"The way of life in America is about to change," Beck said in his hushed, sincere voice just before he began the hard sell.
Beck advised his viewers to look at what “the smart money” is doing in the face of imminent collapse. He showed a headline saying, “Corporate insiders are fleeing the U.S. Stock Market as is George Soros.”
“What does that mean?” Beck asked. He compared federal authorities and, presumably Obama supporters, who say the economy is recovering, to Enron executives who said everything was great there while selling their own stock. “The uber wealthy – and I’m talking again about spooky dude Geore Soros, billionaire wealthy, they are buying TONS of gold. Literally.” As “GOLD” appeared on the screen in large, gold letters, Beck continued on his spiel that sounded more like a late-night infomercial than the opening of what purports to be a cable news show.
And yet, while concealing this conflict of interest, Beck had the nerve to look straight into the camera and say, "I've never done anything... in the last 10 years of my life that isn't good for everybody involved."
