Jon Stewart On O’Reilly: You’ve Been Overtaken On Fox News By A More Extreme Version Of You

Reported by Ellen - September 23, 2010 -

Jon Stewart visited The O’Reilly Factor again last night (9/22/10) and the repartee was sharp, funny and incisive. Stewart confronted O’Reilly on his I’m-just-one-of-the-folks “fable” and how he and Glenn Beck are cashing in on the shtick. Best part, in my view, was when Stewart told O’Reilly he’s “Fox 1.0” whereas “Fox 2.0 has jumped over you to an extent that I don’t think you could ever dream of… On this network, Nixon is a liberal.” Interestingly, O’Reilly didn’t challenge that, though the Nixon part was edited out of the on-air interview. Stewart got in some good jabs at the tea party, too.

“How long are you going to play this fable?” Stewart asked O’Reilly about his “the folks” talk. Returning to it later, Stewart added, “Megyn Kelly’s up there…” I was so looking forward to hearing the rest but he didn’t finish the thought.

Stewart continued with the theme, “Look, I know you and Glenn (Beck) see green, I mean see the people… Where do you set up your merchandizing table at those gigs?”

When O’Reilly said he gives everything to charity, Stewart quipped, “You’re making charity hand over fist, ain’t you… You’re a regular Mother Teresa out there.”

The discussion turned to the tea party. Stewart said, “The tea party scares you as much as it scares anybody. Look what they did to Rove. Oh, that poor boy! The spanking that he received - all he said was, ‘I don’t know, this Christine O’Donnell might be a nut.’ The heavens rained in.”

“Here’s the truth, though, about the tea party,” Stewart added. “Karl Rove and a lot of the Republican establishment thought they could ride that bull, they could ride that intensity and that energy of… religious conservatives and all the people that really believe all the things that Karl Rove and those guys promised them but were never gonna deliver on and now the tables have turned and he’s just another schmuck wearing a red bandanna, running down the streets of Pamplona and the bulls are chasing him.”

In Part 2, Stewart made a similar point. He said O’Reilly had been “overtaken” in right wing punditry “by a more extreme version of you. You’re like Fox 1.0. You’re the beta version. Fox 2.0 has jumped over you to an extent that I don’t think you could ever dream of. And quite frankly, I think you fear. I think deep down inside, you can’t believe what you’ve unleashed.”

“You’re not responsible for it,” Stewart assured O’Reilly. “But what you did is, you… spread out the area, you set up your stuff there and these other people just came plowing through… On this network, you’re left wing… You’re a liberal… On this network, Nixon is a liberal.”

Interestingly, O’Reilly did not challenge one word of Stewart’s assessment, other than to say, a little later, that he likes the tea party.

Stewart also talked about his upcoming Rally to Restore Sanity. He said that “the folks” he meets feel that their voices have been “muted” by the loudmouths in the media. “We’re trying to find that thin sliver of America between pinhead and patriot… Pintriots, if you will.
