Christine O’Donnell Spurns All National Media – While On The Hannity Show Because She Happened To Be In New York

Reported by Ellen - September 22, 2010 -

Christine O’Donnell was back for another dose of Republican Rehab from Sean Hannity last night (9/21/10). Sinking in the polls, the brunt of witchcraft jokes, and now a complaint filed against her by Citizens For Responsibility and Ethics in Washington for using campaign funds for personal expenses, O’Donnell got a double segment for rehab on Hannity. There, next to his warm, supporting glow that beamed out across the country, she announced that she was only going to make herself available to local media from now on because “Delaware is my focus and the local media is my focus.” Except when the local media is inconvenient. She also revealed that she was trying to exclude media from her campaign appearances because they interfered with her ability to meet the voters. The only reason she was on Hannity? She just happened to be in New York on business. Anyone want to bet that her next “business” trip to New York will coincide with her next campaign blunder?

In Part 1 of the interview, O’Donnell waved off the “dabbling in witchcraft” video and insisted, “My focus is on what’s important to the people of Delaware… I’m going to focus on letting the people of Delaware know what I want to do to get jobs back in Delaware, to reduce the size of government, to make our homeland strong once again. We’ve got serious issues facing our country right now and this type of stuff is a diversion and I want to get back on message.”

She spent next to no time talking about those serious issues. If she mentioned what she wants to do to get jobs back in Delaware, I missed it.

Part 2 was no more substantive. O’Donnell discussed Sarah Palin’s tweeted advice to avoid “appeasing national media seeking your destruction.” Of course, Palin is not running for office so she’s got nothing to lose by ducking the media. O’Donnell’s situation is an entirely different kettle of fish - or chicken.

But O’Donnell said, “(Palin's) absolutely right… That’s exactly what we’re doing. I had some business in New York today, so thank you for having me on but our focus is Delaware. I’m going immediately back to Delaware.”

National shows, O’Donnell said, are “off the table. Because that’s not gonna help me get votes. I, instead, want to go to as many town hall forums, as many candidate forums, as many church picnics as I can fit into my schedule so I can meet the voters… Let them say what they will… I’m not going to say any more national media because this is my focus. Delaware is my focus and the local media is my focus.”

That’s not what she reportedly told Fox News Sunday and CBS’ Face The Nation late last week when she developed a last minute “scheduling conflict” right after the video of her talking about “dabbling in witchcraft” was released. Then, she reportedly said she’d be pleased to appear on any Sunday show in the future. O'Donnell's website, newly revamped since the primary win on 9/14, boasts that O’Donnell “appears weekly, sometimes daily, on national news outlets such as the Fox News Channel, CNN, C-SPAN, MSNBC and ABC, including major ratings hits like 'The O’Reilly Factor,' 'Hannity & Colmes,' 'The Glenn Beck Show,' 'Hardball with Chris Matthews' and 'Entertainment Tonight.'"

But even local media seems like it might be a bit too much for her - only because the frenzy is “interfering with my ability to campaign,” you understand. O’Donnell added, “I’ve been talking to some of the people that have invited us to events and we’re asking them to not allow media to attend or at least keep them in the back so that I can meet the voters without them getting pushed.”
