Hannity And Fox News' Blatant Republican Rehab For Marco Rubio

Reported by Ellen - June 24, 2010 -

If you follow the news, you know that Florida’s GOP candidate for the U.S. Senate, Marco Rubio is in a bit of trouble. It has recently been reported that this supposed fiscal conservative has not managed his own funds so well – a house he co-owns is in foreclosure. And Rubio’s early lead in the polls has evaporated. But you would not have known any of that from watching Hannity last night (6/23/10) on the "We report, you decide" network. Rubio appeared in a segment purportedly about the BP oil spill disaster but Hannity quickly turned the segment into a thinly disguised campaign stop for Rubio.

Sean Hannity’s introduction concluded with the leading question, “What will the next disastrous federal intervention be?”

Hannity and Rubio spent a few moments blaming the federal government for the problems with the oil spill (and overlooking BP’s missteps) but before long, Hannity maneuvered the discussion into a series of blatant prompts, disguised as questions, designed to sell Rubio to the viewer:

“I am shocked at Charlie Crist. I don’t think in my life I’ve ever watched a single politician flip-flop and flail like Charlie Crist.”

“More pointedly… do you think now (Crist) wants, is seeking and courting the Democratic Party to get their support to run head-to-head against you?”

Hannity highlighted the “infamous interview” on Fox News Sunday in which Crist said he would not run as an independent. “What does that tell you about Charlie Crist?”

Hannity spent more time talking to Rubio about the campaign than he did about the oil spill disaster.
