No Questions From Van Susteren About Gov. Brewer’s Father’s War Record

Reported by Ellen - June 2, 2010 -

“Democrat” Greta Van Susteren sucked up to interviewed Arizona Governor Jan Brewer for a double segment on On The Record tonight. Despite the length of time, Van Susteren never got around to asking about the news that has just come out about the conflicting story Brewer has told about her father’s war record.

As CQ Politics’ Political Wire reported earlier in the day, Brewer complained in an interview with the Arizona Republic about some of the personal attacks made on her in the wake of signing her state’s controversial immigration bill:

“The Nazi comments... they are awful. Knowing that my father died fighting the Nazi regime in Germany, that I lost him when I was 11 because of that... and then to have them call me Hitler's daughter. It hurts. It's ugliness beyond anything I've ever experienced."

In fact, Brewer’s father did not fight in World War II. The Arizona Guardian reports he worked as a civilian supervisor for a naval munitions depot in Hawthorne, NV. He died of lung disease in 1955.

A spokesperson for Brewer told The Guardian that Brewer “wasn’t embellishing the story at all” because her father died from toxic fumes inhaled while working at the factory.

Was Brewer being deliberately misleading? I’m reporting so that you can decide. But it was certainly worth asking her about, especially given how Fox likes to trumpet Van Susteren as Democratic balance to Sean Hannity, Bill O’Reilly and Glenn Beck. Van Susteren’s lack of curiosity about Brewer’s statement is also curious given Fox News’ big interest in Richard Blumenthal’s embellishment of his military record.

Van Susteren found plenty of time for digs at the Obama administration, however. Two examples: Speaking of President Obama's upcoming meeting with Brewer, Van Susteren commented, "I feel like (Obama's) been cornered, not willingly wanting to do this." Referencing a favorite Fox moment where AG Eric Holder admitted not having read the Arizona bill, Van Susteren asked, "Why do people not read (the bill) and criticize it? Politics? …It’s terrible."

For her part, Brewer did talk about how tough it's been on her since the law was signed. But she made no mention of her father.
