Glenn Beck’s Global Dishonesty

On Tuesday (5/25/10), Glenn Beck was in his wonderland of conspiracy theories where up is down, left is right, and where progressives, as well as Barack Obama, are trying and have been trying to create a one world government.

Before launching into his conspiratorial screed, Beck said, “I don’t think there’s really much speculation on this…”, meaning there isn’t much speculation about the veracity of the conspiracy theory he was about to introduce us to, “... but the attacks will come fast and furious from the Left. Some of them will be deserved if you take this and you go down a tinfoil hat road. “ Which is exactly what he proceeded to do.

Beck’s conspiracy of the day: That the financial reform bill, the bailouts, and climate change legislation are attempts by progressives to move the United States towards a form of global governance. The evidence he presented was a series of quotes from people whom he appears to believe have the desire to eventually install a one world government.

Beck played an out-of-context video of Obama speaking at West Point: “The international order we seek is one that can resolve the challenges of our times.” If you read Obama's words in context, it’s clear Obama is talking about national security, working with our allies as well as fighting our enemies. But to Beck, this was “some kind of attempt to undermine U.S. sovereignty. Beck “proved” it by playing a clip of a commercial for the Navy which called itself “a global force for good.”

Beck played a second video clip of Obama, speaking in Europe during the 2008 campaign. “I speak to you, not as a candidate for president, but as a citizen, a proud citizen of the United States and a fellow citizen of the world.”

“Why was he over there?” Beck complained suggestively. “There is no such thing as citizen of the world. We're Americans… for Obama, it's time we all just come together.”

Beck played yet another clip of Obama, this time saying, “Now is the time to join together through constant cooperation and strong institutions and shared sacrifice and a global commitment to progress to meet the challenges of the 21st century.”

Beck replied sarcastically, “I mean, you might be thinking so what? The president of the United States is talking about a new international order, being citizens of the world, joining together through strong institutions and a global commitment to progress.”

Beck also played clips of SEIU’s Andy Stern, one of Beck’s favorite targets, whom Beck once again falsely said was the most frequent visitor to the White House. He also played clips of Al Gore and Hillary Clinton. It seemed that anyone who has ever used the world “global” is part of the conspiracy.

By cherrypicking these clips and taking them out of context, Beck was dishonestly creating a train of thought that has nothing to do with reality. But, thanks to his platform at Fox News, Beck’s paranoia has now been validated with the imprimatur of “news” for his audience.
