Stephen Colbert Takes Down Glenn Beck - Again

Glenn Beck has proven to be a boon to comedians. Last week, Lewis Black, on the Daily Show, claimed Beck has “Nazi Tourettes” and that watching his show is like playing a game of Six Degrees of Kevin Bacon, but “there's just one degree and Kevin Bacon is Hitler.” However, the funnier take last week was on The Colbert Report. To his credit, Stephen Colbert first admitted his bias, that he is a “huge fan of Glenn Beck” and even wears his cologne, “Patriot Tears.” I was honoured to hear him use my nomenclature for his fans as “Beckerheads.”

During this skit Colbert managed to make stops at: the Pope pedophilia scandal; rodeo clowns, with a pretty good “bullshit” joke; the 100-year plan called “The Plan;” Beck’s “Refounding” of America; and showed that his Glenn Beck icon is now weeping blood. Then, as Beck tried to position himself as the natural successor to Martin Luther King, Jr., Colbert brought back one of the Baby Boomers' favourite games (okay, mine) from the old Price is Right tee vee show. The rules to “Glenn to the Mountaintop” are simple: Every time Beck says something King-like, the yodeler advances up the mountaintop. Whenever he’s says something stupid, the yodeler slips back down to the bottom. There’s no way to do the following 8:18 tour de force justice, but you’ll want to stay to the very end to hear Colbert sing a selection from The Lion King.
