Bill O’Reilly’s Headline Hypocrisy

Reported by Priscilla - March 1, 2010 -

Bill O’Reilly doesn’t like the “far left” Huffington Post. The man who works for a network that would make Joseph Goebbels proud, once claimed that the Huffington Post blog used the same tactics as the Nazis. He doesn’t like Arianna Huffington, the founder of the website, and said that he doesn’t “see any differences between Arianna Huffington and the Nazis. So it’s not suprising that O’Reilly would, in his February 26th “Pinheads and Patriots” segment, be critical of the Huffington Post which ran a headline that America’s narcissistic Daddy took umbrage to.

The Huffington Post’s Danny Shea, reporting on O’Reilly’s appearance on “Good Morning America,” headlined his article “Bill O’Reilly: Sarah Palin Needs to Go to College.” Bill’s balding pate must be getting quite thin because he felt that the headline sounded “insulting.” (Referring to “far left” websites as “liberal loons” isn’t insulting?) He played the video of his GMA appearance during which he said “Sarah Palin needs to go to college, political college…” He concluded with the comment: “So once again — once again — the left-wing media distorts the conversation. The Huffington Post crossed into pinhead territory.”

So it does appear that Shea’s sin was in cropping Bill’s sentence. Of course bloviating Bill would never crop anybody’s statement would he? Uh, oh – looks like he just might have done that when he cropped Ted Turner’s statement to make it look like Turner said that “he had a hard time choosing sides in the war on terror.” And when O’Reilly attacked former Fox News Watch contributor, Neal Gabler, as a “rabid dog,” (insulting?) he cropped a comment from Gabler (unlike O’Reilly a real journalist) to show that Gabler had picked up conspiracy theories from a “far left blog.” But accusing the Huffington Post of “distorting” the conversation? Excuse me? Not only did the Huffington Post article contain O’Reilly entire quote; but it also had the video.

But let’s talk about headlines. Obviously O’Reilly doesn’t read the “Fox Nation” which sometimes publishes headlines that are deceptive (here, here) and insulting – such as the one in which they use the ethnic slur, “anchor babies.” But if you want to talk about an insult and a lie, (not to mention just bizarre!) look no further than O’Reilly’s December 4th, 2009 article in the Ventura County Star which is headlined, “Humanists pushing a godless Christmas.” In the article, Bill makes the claim that a “virulently anti-god group,” in putting up a few bus ads which touted the benefits of atheism, was “pushing a godless Christmas.” Never mind that a spokesperson from the American Humanist Association said that it was a way to reach out to secular folks during the holiday season. But for O’Reilly, who sees no salvation outside the church, is was just part of the nefarious agenda of those nasty humanists who seek to push their evil, secular ways and godless Christmases onto God loving Christians like Bill O’Reilly. So while the Huffington Post merely cropped part of O’Reilly comment, in an article that was straightforward and factual, O’Reilly’s headline is his partisan interpretation of something done by a group (and Bill Maher and the ACLU) that he seeks to insult.

So remind me. Who is really the “Pinhead” here?
