Fox Nation Uses Partisan, Unsourced, Cropped Video To Attack Martha Coakley

Reported by Priscilla - January 13, 2010 -

In its ongoing support for the senate candidacy of Republican Scott Brown, Fox is claiming that Democratic candidate, Martha Coakley, states that there are no more “terrorists” in Afghanistan. This morning Fox&Friends advanced this meme, which was promoted by right wing “Gateway Pundit” (they of the Kevin Jennings smears) and now Fox Nation is doing the same thing. The morning pals used a video which purported to show Ms. Coakley denying the existence of terrorism in addition to falsely claiming that she said that “the Taliban is no longer a threat.” Fox Nation has spiced up this right wing lie with another partisan thread, titled “Coakley: There are No More Terrorists In Afghanistan,” that links to a partisan video which, like the Fox & Friends video, crops out the rest of Coakley’s comments – and more. Thus, context is lost; but the right wing propaganda point is a smashing success as evidenced by the 267 drooling “we hate librul dems” types of comments which don’t exactly show the “civil discourse” that allegedly defines Fox Nation!

The video that is being used to smear Ms. Coakley crops her statement, regarding Afghanistan. During the recent debate, she appears to say that “I'm not sure there is a way to succeed. If the goal was -- and the mission in Afghanistan was to go in because we believed that the Taliban was giving harbor to terrorists. We supported that. I supported that goal. They're gone.” That’s it – end of story. But the problem is that she continued to say “They're not there anymore. They're in, apparently Yemen, they're in Pakistan. Let's focus our efforts on where Al Qaeda is and not always decide that we need to…” So she was talking about Al Qaeda which, according to senior US military, is no longer a threat in Afghanistan. The video on Fox Nation ramps up the propaganda a notch in that the tape of the CIA bomber, with the leader of Pakistani Taliban leader, was shown before and after the cropped Coakley quote. Like the viral right wing “America Rising” video, promoted by Fox Nation, this video is unsourced.

Gotta love Fox News’ and Fox & Friends’ idea of “fair and balanced” “journalism!”
