Fox & Friends Disprespect Old Glory?

Reported by Priscilla - December 30, 2009 -

Back in October, the right wing was all in a twitter about a video in an on-line contest for health care reform ads. The video showed a flag, painted on a wall, with a message about the urgency about health care reform. Not surprisingly, the usual crew of Fox “patriots” was outraged about this flag “desecration.” Flash forward to this morning’s Fox & Friends. The gang interviewed a gentleman, from Florida, who posts roadside signs about how the country needs to “wake up” to an out of control congress. Fine. Gene Gartman, a Vietnam vet, seems like an affable fellow who is using his First Amendment right to protest against the government. The morning crew, who wouldn’t have had the same reaction to signs about Bush’s “crusade,” was quite impressed and didn’t have a problem with the upside down flags being flown from Gartman’s signs. Gartman said that this is a sign of distress and that it isn’t disrespectful. (Somehow I suspect that an anti Bush sign with upside down flags wouldn’t have gotten the same support!) But the US flag code states “The flag should never be displayed with union down, except as a signal of dire distress in instances of extreme danger to life or property.” I guess it’s all about the meaning of “distress” and who is experiencing it. Ya think!
