Fox Website/Fox Nation Attack Larry David?

Reported by Priscilla - October 28, 2009 -

Lest there be any doubt about whom Fox is directing its agitprop toward, today’s Fox News website lede article says it all. In the nasty, bad, “secular progressive” world, upset Christians might get a mention in the culture section – but as the top “news” item?? Only on Fox do these poor “victims” get pride of place. And it seems that persecuted Christians are feeling aggrieved about this week’s Larry David episode in which he accidentally splashes a drop of urine on a scholocky picture of Jesus. Not surprisingly, Catholic crusader and Fox fave, Bill Donahue, whose latest outrage about Penn and Teller was featured on Fox&Friends, is outraged about Larry David. And thus we have the lede article which references criticisms of the episode by Bill Donahue and another right wing Catholic. And to think that on Monday night’s Daily Show, “Curb” cast member Susie Essman told Jon Stewart that the right wing loves Larry because he’s so politically incorrect. Oh, and BTW, in a stunning example of the Fox media “reach around,” the linked Fox website article is also the fifth lede on Fox Nation titled “Outrage, Larry David Urinates on Jesus” – a title which really conjures up something that really didn’t happen in quite the way it is being presented. But who needs context when you’re pushing propaganda!

The Fox article, titled “Larry David Blasted For “Curb’ Where He Urinates On Jesus Painting," begins by noting that Larry David is “under attack” from critics who say that he is “mocking religion and Christian belief in miracles.” The critics they identify are Deal Hudson and Bill Donahue. Deal Hudson is publisher of Inside Catholic.com. A former Fordham professor who left his position at the college due to allegations of sexual harassment, he was McCain's Catholic advisor during McCain's presidential campaign. Bill Donahue, the head of “The Catholic League” is an unmarried Catholic male who whose anti-Semiticism includes attacks against Jews in Hollywood (they "like anal sex" and "hate Catholics") whom, one presumes, he would love to put on a blacklist just like in the “good old days” when Joe McCarthy was a popular figure for American Catholics. He is not an official spokesperson for the Catholic Church; but rather, a tiresome crank who “doth protest too much” about things that he thinks are indecent especially things like Mapplethorpe photos. So “blasts” from Hudson and Donahue mean little in the reality based world. But Fox Opinion News, ever eager to foment more divisive hatred towards libruls (and a pinch of anti Islam), in its ongoing “culture war,” is giving them some publicity for their their religious wrath about Larry David, the comic genius who was responsible for Seinfeld and now his own, very popular, irreverent comedy, “Curb Your Enthusiasm” – a show which lampoons everybody and everything.

The article actually describes the incident in which Larry, at the behest of the Julia Lewis Dreyfuss character, is trying to convince the woman whom he fired for her chunky bare midriff, to come back to work for him. Larry goes to this woman’s house which she shares with her mother. The house is full of tacky religious memorablia including a picture (painting is really “gilding the lilly’) of Jesus in the bathroom. Because Larry is taking medication which results in a strong urine flow, he accidentally splashes the picture which creates a “teardrop” under Jesus’ eye. Mother and daughter later see the painting and decide that it’s a miracle and decide to take the picture “on tour.”

So despite the headlines, Larry didn’t purposefully urinate on Jesus. But that doesn’t matter to Hudson, who pulls out the Christian right wing canard that “if the same thing was done to a symbol of any other religions -- Jewish or Muslim -- there'd be a huge outcry.” I guess Hudson didn’t see the episode when Susie, in talking about whether they’d be accepted by a WASP country club, said that her husband’s character, Jeff, had a “Jew face.” Undaunted by criticism of anti-Semiticism, Donahue never fails to disappoint: "This might be fun to watch, but since HBO only likes to dump on Catholics (it was just a couple of weeks ago that Sarah Silverman insulted Catholics on "Real Time with Bill Maher"), and David is Jewish, we'll never know." The sexually repressed and humorless Donahue claimed that Larry’s “erection” joke was “crude.” And certainly those “Christians” who see Jesus’ face in French Toast or “crying statues of saints” are well worthy of spoof.

Comment: The Larry David show is on a cable network that people pay for. While the humor can be seen as “crude,” the lies and character attacks on Fox News, which reaches more people than “Curb,” is far more obscene. Interestingly, when Mormons complained about an episode of HBO’s “Big Love,” I don’t recall Fox posting the complaints in a lede format. This attempt, by Fox, to rally the pitchfork gang in an attack on a comic is pathetic and really much ado about nothing. All I can say (and I suspect Larry would agree) to Fox, Deal, and Donahue is piss off!!!
