Fox Nation Divisiveness

Reported by Ellen - August 24, 2009 -

Fox Nation boasts about its dedication to tolerance and civil discourse (and never mind about Fox News host Glenn Beck calling President Obama a racist) but there never seems to be a limit on what's considered "tolerant" and "civil" when talking about Obama. The latest example is Fox Nation's comparison of Obama to the Mafia. As Media Matters notes, this is an old smear newly revived. But what really caught my eye was how, lower on the page, Fox Nation had a blaring headline that Rep. Maxine Waters called health care opponents "neanderthals." So comparing the Democratic president to the mob gets top billing on "American idealists" Fox Nation, but it's big news that a Democratic Congresswoman calls her opponents "neanderthals." The two headlines are not just anti-Democratic, they demonize Democrats, and the two together point to the conclusion that that is the overall goal. One headline suggests that Democrat Waters has no respect for her opponents while the other shows that it's OK to demean your opponent if he's President Obama. Oh, and I'm sure it's just a coincidence that both targets here are black. Screen grab after the jump.
