Hypochristian Huckabee Lies About Healthcare Bill

Reported by Alex - August 22, 2009 -

Last weekend, on the eve of his Bash America Tour , dominionist pastor and wannabe Presidential contender Mike Huckabee told bald-faced lies about the healthcare bill to his flock of faithful Fox followers, and discouraged them from even attempting to read any of it. I guess his copy of the Bible is missing the commandment that reads “Thou shalt not bear false witness”.

After a seemingly endless monologue which, I guess, was supposed to be clever and funny, the Huckster read out some questions on the healthcare plan sent in by his sheeple:

Here's a question we got... "I understand this plan will cover illegal aliens. Why? They’re here illegally." Well, the fact is, when you hear this number, 47 million uninsured Americans, remember that this number includes 12 to 13 million people who are here illegally, and I guess when someone uses that figure, they plan to cover them with insurance, and you'll be paying for it. There truth is, there's only 5 million truly uninsured people, who just can’t get it. Some could get it, but they don’t wanna use their money on it, they'd rather use it on a truck, or maybe a vacation; some just haven't filled out the paperwork to get the insurance program that they qualify for, and I'm not sure why we think they're gonna fill out the paperwork for one we think we're gonna create; so there's really about 5 million completely uninsured people. It'd make more sense to cover them, than it would be to disrupt the entire system for the 91% of Americans with insurance who like what they have.

Politifact sez:

politifact pants on fire

“Pants on Fire!” Here’s what they tell us about the bill as it stands at the moment:

“Section 152…includes a generic nondiscrimination clause saying that insurers may not discriminate with regard to "personal characteristics extraneous to the provision of high quality health care or related services." The section says nothing about "non-US citizens" or immigrants, legal or otherwise. In fact, the legislation specifically states that "undocumented aliens" will not be eligible for credits to help them buy health insurance, in Section 246 on page 143.

Geddit, Huck? Section 152 is nothing more that a generic non-discrimination clause referring to race, color, gender, creed etc. – and in case anyone wants to cite it to demand the provision of insurance to undocumented aliens, section 246 expressly forbids the use of federal healthcare credits for its purchase.

Some more facts that Huckabee “ignores”:

• A recent survey shows that thirty-six percent of non-elderly adults who tried to purchase individual health insurance directly from insurance companies were either discriminated against because of a pre-existing condition, or dropped when they became seriously ill (that’s 12.6 million people);

• Rural Americans have higher rates of poverty, mortality, uninsurance, and limited access to a primary health care provider. Maintaining the status quo in the face of the recession and increasing unemployment will not improve this situation for the almost 50 million Americans who face these difficulties;

• The World Health Organization’s examination of inner-city healthcare equates healthcare access there to the conditions found in third-world countries – one of the reasons the USA is 37th in healthcare quality. (Source)

According to the National Coalition on Health Care, “the percentage of uninsured Americans under age 65 represented 27 percent of the population…nearly 54 million Americans under the age of 65 were uninsured in the first-half of 2007.

• Nearly 90 million people – about one-third of the population below the age of 65 spent a portion of either 2007 or 2008 without health coverage (source: NCHC)

• The large majority of the uninsured (85 percent) are native or naturalized citizens (Source: NCHC)

Huckster Huckabee has been preaching the same nonsense at least since the run-up to the Presidential primaries. An article from FactCheck.org quotes him stating at an early debate,

Of those 47 million uninsured, 1/3 don’t have it because they are self-insured. Another 1/3 don’t have it because they think they’re healthy and invincible. There is 1/3 that don’t have it because they can’t afford it.

FactCheck contacted his campaign to ask how he knew 1/3 thought they were “invincible” but received no response; nor were they able to find any research that backed up the Huckster’s Superman theory. They did discover that 3 million people at that time were uninsured because they had declined workplace insurance, so perhaps Huckabee was using that good ol’ wingnut math – you know, the kind where 2+2=5. I guess he was also using wingnut logic when he came up with the idea that “1/3 of the uninsured are self-insured”. Whaaa’?! Self-insurance, as FactCheck point out, is the same as having to pay for your own healthcare costs because you are uninsured. Duh.

Huckabee also lied about abortion provision under the bill:

The sad truth is that there are a lot of people who have written this bill who believe that covering abortions at your expense is a responsibility. Many of us disagree, believing that once we decide that life is disposable and expendable, there's not end to the complete disruption of human life.

Translation: Once abortion – which you will have to pay for – is allowed, can pulling the plug on Granny be far behind?

Wrong, Pastor Pinnocchio:

politifact - false

Politifact sez FALSE! See their full report here

CBS News summarizes :

House Energy and Commerce Committee [have] adopted an amendment, proposed by Rep. Lois Capps (D-Calif.), that would prohibit taxpayer dollars from funding abortions. [Got that, Foxbots? A CALIFORNIA DEMOCRAT proposed an amendment that would prohibit taxpayer dollars from funding abortions.] The amendment would not allow the federal government to either require or prohibit abortion coverage by private insurers. It requires at least one plan from the federal health insurance exchange in each region of the country to cover abortion, and at least one of the plans to not cover abortion…Private health care providers are free to cover abortion, but not with federal funds... money for abortions would come from what participants pay into the public plan."

In other words, if a woman wants an abortion, she will have to pay for it herself through her premiums, one way or the other.

Towards the end of the segment, a viewer asks "Where online can I find this health bill to read for myself?" Oh Mein Gott in Himmel, this guy wants firsthand information! Huckster replies,

Jerry, if you got a lotta time, and don't mind gettin' real sleepy, you can go to my website...You can read the entire thing, all 1000 pages of the House bill alone. Happy reading, Jerry [said with scathing sarcasm] - gonna be a lot of fun.

Translation: Don't bother, Jerry (Damn, where is that Bible quote that says “Bother ye not your heads with learning and knowledge, for corporate shills shall tell you all you need to know”?)

“Pastor” Huckabee and his ilk must preach from the Bible that this came from :

And Jesus told those gathered around him, “You are not your brother’s keeper. You do not have to take care of anybody but yourself. It’s all about you. Why should you care about anybody else? Why should you allow your hard earned money to go to support another human being? It’s your money! If you start taking care of other people, you may not be able to provide for yourself and your own family. Family comes first. Health care is not a right. If a person wants health care then they ought to provide it for themselves. Freebies are not a part of the kingdom of God. And if a person dies because of inadequate health care or lack of health care, don’t worry about that either. Don’t sweat it. Hey, people have to die some way and people have to die some day anyway.”

Ain’t it the sad truth. For Huckabee and his audience of clap-on-cue trained seals, it’s all good for those who can afford it, and for most of those with no coverage, why, its their own fault. If truth be told, its probably because they don’t have enough faith, because the faithful are rewarded with everything they need! And anyway, if you haven’t got the money, don’t worry, because Jesus’s Emergency Room accepts everyone - especially the poor!

I wish that was funny, but it’s too true to be funny. Corporate shills and power-mongers masquerading as Christians haved hijacked the healthcare debate as they have hijacked so much else since the days of St. Ronnie of Hollywood, with their weasel-words, cherry-picked from the Bible, crafted with the most sophisticated mass marketing techniques that money and influence can buy, and trumpeted far and wide by not only the rightwing echo chamber but the quick-story-for-a-quick-buck MSM. These same people who decry the supposed “immorality” of atheists and “secular progressives” are happy to lie through their teeth and discard all notions of ethics in order to guard what they believe is rightfully theirs as God’s elect while the underprivileged are denied treatment and die. And the sad thing is that they have persuaded so many of the genuinely downtrodden – the Americans who struggle to make ends meet, whose houses and trailers are being reposessed thanks to corporate greed, the ones who can’t afford health insurance and at the same time are the ones most at risk of serious illness – that they somehow have common cause with the wealthy elitists who are working them to the bone for criminally low pay and then denying them affordable healthcare in the name of unregulated free market capitalism.

Jesus wept.

Since the “religious” “right” are so fond of quoting the Old Testament to back up their dubious claims, I leave you with this quote describing the role of a king (i.e. the government) from the Book of Soloman, found at the site of a progressive, actively pro-health-care pastor, Monte Asbury . (Monte also has a page of links for debunking health-reform myths here.)

For he will deliver the needy who cry out,
the afflicted who have no one to help.
He will take pity on the weak and the needy
and save the needy from death.
He will rescue them from oppression and violence,
for precious is their blood in his sight.
